DETROIT - The Detroit Sports Commission (DSC), during the kickoff of media days, announced details of recipients who will receive grants as part of its $1 million Living Legacy Initiative in preparation for the 2024 NFL Draft presented by Bud Light. Additionally, local community organizations have also received grants from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, Amazon, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the NFL, and other entities.

Over 30 local community organizations received extra grants from The Living Legacy Initiative, which was made possible by generous donors. The "Draft Picks," or grant recipients, were announced in a festive draft-style format. The recipients were given branded jerseys and hats as souvenirs. Organizations were given the opportunity to showcase their mission and cause-related activities.

Faye Nelson, co-chair of the Detroit Sports Commission Community Engagement Committee, said the announcement is the result of two years of research and planning. The program focuses on local needs, key support pillars, and organizations in each of Detroit's seven districts. (Photos by Montez Miller/Tell Us USA News Network)

Faye Nelson, the co-chair of the Detroit Sports Commission Community Engagement Committee, said, "This announcement by the Detroit Sports Commission is a culmination of nearly two years of extensive research and planning efforts by our Community Engagement Committee to identify local needs and gaps, define key pillars of support, identify local organizations that are doing great work in the area, and deliver a comprehensive grant distribution program focused on the seven districts of Detroit."

Late last year, the Detroit Sports Commission announced the launch of its $1 million Living Legacy Initiative, which will promote youth literacy and sports, focusing especially on empowering girls in sports in Detroit and surrounding areas. The initiative played a crucial role in the DSC's bid for the 2024 NFL Draft and extended efforts through the 2027 NCAA Men's Final Four at Ford Field and beyond.

The committee collaborated closely with the Detroit City Council to ensure that non-profit organizations operating in the education and youth sports sectors, regardless of their size, have access to funding. The committee received 60 grant proposals from all nine members of the City Council. The proposals are currently under review, and the recipients of the selected grants will be announced in the coming weeks.
