Pandemic

closeness"
during
crisis.
DETROIT
- In a
new open
letter
to the
faithful,
“10
Guideposts
for
Christians
in the
Time of
the
Coronavirus
Pandemic,"
Archbishop
Allen H.
Vigneron
states
that
while
necessary
to avoid
the
spread
of
coronavirus,
social
distancing
doesn’t
have to
mean
spiritual
distancing.
After
his historic
announcement
to
temporally
suspend
Masses
in the
Archdiocese
of
Detroit
as a way
to fight
the
virus,
Archbishop
Vigneron
on
Wednesday
released
a list
of 10
“guideposts”
to light
Catholics’
path
forward.
The
guideposts,
inspired
by
similar
guideposts
in his
2017
pastoral
letter, Unleash
the
Gospel,
will be
accompanied
by weekly
resources,
prayers,
ideas
and
activities to
support
families
during
the
temporary
suspension
of
school,
public
Masses
and
gatherings.
“In
my
service
as
spiritual
father,
I
earnestly
desire
to offer
support
and wise
counsel
in order
to help
us cope
with the
stress
that
comes
with
living
through
this
pandemic.”
Archbishop
Vigneron
wrote in
his
guideposts.
“God in
Christ
is the
Lord of
history.
He’s in
charge.”
Vigneron
encouraged
the
faithful
to
cooperate
with
civil
and
public
health
authorities
so as to
protect
the
common
good.
“Holiness
works
with
science.
Our
motive
is love
for God
and
neighbor
and to
protect
the
vulnerable.”
As
previously
announced,
Archbishop
Vigneron
will
celebrate
a live
streamed
Mass
each
Sunday
from the
Cathedral
of the
Most
Blessed
Sacrament
at noon
eastern
time.
Live
Masses
are
being
streamed
throughout
the week
and can
be found
at
aod.org/livemasses.
Important
announcements
regarding
the
Archdiocese’s
response
and
recommendations
regarding
the
COVID-19
outbreak
are
regularly
updated
and
found at
aod.org/emergencyresponse.
