Plymouth
UCC,

Mrs.

The
celebration
will
also
include
performances
by the
Windsor-Detroit
Dance
Company,
Plymouth
UCC mass
choir,
and
more.
Since
its
humble
beginnings,
music
has
played a
pivotal
role at
Plymouth
UCC.
Today,
the
church
has six
choirs
who sing
traditional
and
contemporary
gospel
music.
Each are
typically
accompanied
by pipe
and/or
Hammond
organ,
piano,
drums,
bass and
guitar.
Occasionally,
chamber
musicians
accompany
the
church’s
longest
performing
choir,
The
Renaissance
Choir,
who sing
spirituals,
anthems
and
cantatas.
Nearly
every
Sunday,
Rev.
Hood III
plays
his
harmonica.
In
addition
to its
robust
music
ministry,
Plymouth
leads a
variety
of
progressive
missions
impacting
the
lives of
families
and
children,
particularly
in
underserved
communities
near
Midtown.
Notable
missions
include
the
annual
summer
camp for
children
in
Oscada,
MI; a
scholarship
program,
averaging
$2,000
to each
church
member
applicant
graduating
high
school
who is
accepted
to a
college
or
university
or is
currently
enrolled;
the
Annual
Black &
Ivory
College
Tour,
which
exposes
students
to
historically
black
colleges
and
universities
as well
as ivy
league
institutions;
and
more.
Since
1997,
Rev.
Hood,
III has
promoted
the
widely
adopted
“Ring in
the New
Year
with a
Bell,
not a
Bang”
safety
campaign,
reminding
Wayne
County
residents
of the
dangerous
consequences
of using
guns
during
New
Year’s
Eve
celebrations.
Under
Hood
III’s
leadership,
the
church
has
remained
an
active
Detroit
participant.
Whether
hosting
political
candidates
to help
create a
more
informed
citizenry
or
serving
has host
site for
vote
casting
or voter
registration,
Plymouth
UCC’s
mission
work
will
remain
relevant
and
representative
of its
legacy
leadership;
most
notably
that of
Civil
rights
activist
and
former
Detroit
City
Council
member
Rev. Dr.
Nicholas
Hood Sr.
