AAA Michigan urges motorists offers safety tips during Memoral Day weekend

Dearborn, Michigan (May 25, 2018) — Memorial Day is one of the most popular travel weekends of the year. AAA predicts nearly 1.3 million Michiganders will travel during the holiday, with over 90% of them traveling by automobile. This is the highest number of motoring travelers expected since 2005.

With so many vehicles on the road for the long weekend, AAA and its Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation encourage motorists to plan ahead for getting home safely, especially when alcohol consumption may be involved.

“Everyone deserves to have a safe Memorial Day weekend. We urge travelers to make arrangements for safe transportation and to avoid driving impaired,” said Susan Hiltz, Michigan public affairs director for AAA — The Auto Club Group.

With that in mind and as part of its legacy of traffic safety advocacy and commitment to the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) national strategy on highway safety, AAA offers these tips:

AAA’s Holiday Safety Tips
1. Always drive safe and sober. Take the pledge to drive drug and alcohol-free .
2. Designate an alcohol and other drug-free driver before the party starts.
3. Be a responsible party host and check out the Great Pretenders Party Guide.
4. If you have had too much to drink, use the TOW TO GO program in Michigan offered by AAA in partnership with Budweiser. These are the guidelines:
• Call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246
Available Friday, May 25th through 6am on Tuesday, May 29th for a confidential local ride to a safe location within 10 miles
• The AAA tow truck takes the vehicle and the driver home
• Free and available to AAA members and non-members
• Tow to Go may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions

Since its inception in 1998, Tow to Go has safely removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from roads across the Southeast and Midwest. It is designed to be a safety net for motorists who did not plan ahead when drinking away from home on celebratory holidays. The program is offered based on the availability of AAA drivers and tow trucks during times of high call volume. The Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation provides Tow to Go to help keep all motorists safe from the dangers of impaired driving.

“The Tow to Go program helps save lives,” said Susan Hiltz, Michigan public affairs director for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This year marks the 20th anniversary of AAA’s partnership with Anheuser-Busch, and together we have built a unique program that provides safe rides home to hundreds of drivers every year.”

“The Tow to Go program is an effective way to promote the use of Designated Drivers and help prevent impaired driving,” said Katja Zastrow, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for Anheuser-Busch. “We are proud to partner with AAA and their roadside assistance drivers to help keep our roads safe.” Anheuser-Busch Wholesalers have been cosponsors of the program since its 1998 inception, provided funding for the service and worked with local bars and restaurants to help educate servers on the importance of not over-serving their customers.

Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) SaferRide app to help keep drunk drivers off the roads. It allows users to call a taxi or a friend and identify their location so they can be picked up.
5. None for the road. One drink can be one too many. Learn more about the effects of alcohol on driving and AAA’s efforts to reduce alcohol and other drug-related injuries and deaths.
6. Never ride in a car with someone who is intoxicated.
7. Report impaired drivers to local law enforcement immediately.
