Black Business Owners Form New Metro-Detroit Black Business Alliance

• TCF commits $1M to new initiative and a five-year partnership to help support
• Charity Dean announced as President and CEO

DETROIT - A group of Black business owners have banned together to create the new Metro-Detroit Black Business Alliance (MDBBA). MDBBA was conceived during the throes of COVID-19. The group began out of recognition of the unique and specific challenges facing Black business owners during this particularly difficult and unique time. Realizing their experiences and desires to keep their businesses not only just afloat, but able to stay open and be successful, MDBBA was born. Charity Dean will serve as President and Chief Executive Officer and Charles Nolen as the Board Chair.

“Systemic and structural racism have created an unequal wealth gap in our country. As a granddaughter and daughter of black entrepreneurs, and as a black entrepreneur, I am honored to lead this organization that will create programs and advocate for polices that will close that wealth gap for black entrepreneurs. says Dean, president and CEO, MDBBA.

MDBBA seeks to develop programs and advocate for policies that result in profitable and sustainable Black owned businesses that are connected to public and private economic opportunities while building trusted relationships. Collaboration and partnerships will be key to lasting success for the MDBBA.

TCF Bank, a founding partner with the Alliance, announced a $1M gift to support the Alliance over the next five years. Gary Torgow, chairman of TCF Bank, says, “This is precisely what corporations should be doing. We are enthusiastic about this partnership and are committed and honored to continually serve and lift up Black owned businesses in the region.”

MDBBA board members include: Roderick Hardamon, Urge Development; Regina Gaines, House of Pure Vin; Richard Hosey, Hosey Development; Danielle North, Kidz Kingdom; Kandiss Ecton, Ecton State Farm; Joseph Hines, Therapy Spa; Kerry Buffington, Kapstone Employment Services; Tatiana Grant, 2050 Partners; Brian McKinney, Gayanga Construction; Harvey Hollins, Hollins Consulting; and other black business owners from Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. Lauren Stovall, co-owner, Hot Sam’s, which is celebrating 100 -years as a Detroit based and Black owned business says, “The work of the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance is so timely, in that there is an awakening that has happened across this country in the last year or so that shines light on the plight and the fight of the black business and the unique challenges that we face. To have the support of an alliance is critical in addressing and eradicating these truths."

MDBBA has a full calendar of events and programming planned for 2021 including programs planned with partners at the Detroit Pistons. MDBBA also plans on releasing a Black business directory.

“The Metro-Detroit Black Business Alliance is focused solely on impact,” says Nolen, Board Chair, MDBBA, and owner, Cutters Bar & Grill. “From micro businesses to large scale Black owned corporations, we want our black owned business not just to survive- but to thrive.”
