City set to begin making major improvements to Spirit Plaza starting Sept. 4

• $800K improvements include removal of median, added green space, playscape and more
• Plaza will be under construction during month of September, following Jazz Festival
• Plaza programming will be limited, Food Trucks to remain during construction

DETROIT - Following Detroit City Council’s recent vote to approve Spirit Plaza as a permanent public space, the City of Detroit is about to invest nearly $800,000 in improvements to what has become the “People’s Plaza.”

Construction will begin September 4 following the conclusion of the Detroit Jazz Festival and continue through September. Though the plaza will not be closed, there will be limited programming until work is completed. Two previously scheduled events, as well as the food truck program, will continue as planned.

Since it opened on a temporary basis two years ago, Spirit Plaza has become a popular gathering place for people to see live performances, participate in peaceful demonstrations, do the Hustle, enjoy good food or just people watch. Once the work is completed by October, however, visitors will have more options.

Among the new features at Spirit Plaza will be:
• removal of the Woodward median and expansion of plaza green space and landscaping
• creation of a dedicated performance stage
• installation of playground equipment and stationary musical instruments
• installation of new tables, chairs, charging stations and drinking fountains

“The amenities added to the plaza will make the space more inclusive to all ages and help to make it an even more special gathering place for the public,” said Brad Dick, Group Executive of Services and Infrastructure. “We’re thankful to City Council for supporting this vision for Spirit Plaza.

The total cost of the project is $794,750. Programming is expected to resume early October with a kick-off celebration. For more information, please contact Detroit Parks & Recreation at 313-224-1100.
