Detroit continues Halloween in the D with celebrations across the city

• Family-friendly activities to be offered at Detroit recreations centers across the city
• Rouge, Chandler and Clark parks will transformed into haunted parks; DDOT to revive its popular Haunted Bus
• City seeks candy donations to support trunk-or-treating at police precincts and fire stations

The City of Detroit continues its new tradition of Halloween in the D with a host of fun, family-friendly activities all across the city on Oct. 31. The Mayor’s Office, led by the Department of Neighborhoods, kicked off its push to solicit candy donations and volunteers for a citywide series of special events, haunted houses and trunk-or-treat locations at parks, recreation centers, police stations and fire houses.

Mayor Mike Duggan was joined by the City’s public safety officials, community representatives and corporate sponsors for the kickoff at the 8th Precinct on the northwest side.

Most of the Halloween in the D events will take place Oct. 31. However, the haunted house at the 11th Precinct will be open several days leading up to Halloween.

“Last year, thousands of Detroit children and families enjoyed a great Halloween in the D and we plan to build on that success this year,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. "Thanks to our partners and volunteers, our city has a wonderful new tradition that children will remember for decades to come.”

City officials declared the first year of the effort a success as:

• 225,000 pieces of candy were distributed
• Nearly 35,000 children visited recreation centers, police precincts and fire stations or attended haunted parks and Spirit Plaza
• The City received donations of $64,000 in cash and $30,000 of in-kind support
• More than 100 City employee volunteers and 150 corporate volunteers and residents assisted with Halloween activities.
Events planned across the city on Halloween Night include:
• Three haunted parks at: Rouge, Chandler and Clark parks
• A harvest fest on Woodward Avenue at Spirit Plaza
• Trunk-or-Treat events at all 11 Detroit Police precincts and other activities
• Detroit Fire Department distributing candy at fire stations
• Haunted DDOT Bus
• Halloween parties and events at Detroit recreation centers
• Also, seven community meals, one in each district, to celebrate and recruit volunteers for year-round neighborhood radio patrols October 30

“Halloween in the D is yet another great example of how the police and community come together for a safe and enjoyable family event for all those who live, work and play in the city of Detroit,” said Chief James Craig.

Residents’ Assistance Still Needed While the City is taking care of most of the planning and logistics, there are still some things residents can do to support the Halloween in the D celebration, including:

• Donate candy or volunteer to decorate your car for Trunk-or-Treat activities at police precincts
• Join or start a local neighborhood radio patrol

“DTE is proud to support this Halloween tradition that ensures children have fun while being safe,” said Nancy Moody, DTE Vice President of Public Affairs. “Our employee volunteers — DTE’s Care Force — are also actively engaged in the event and will bring their full energy to ensuring this is the best Halloween in the D yet.”
