The
Detroit
Police
Departments'
5th
Precinct
located
at the
corner
of
Jefferson
and St
Jean
closed
its
doors
for the
final
time and
moved to
11187
Gratiot
where
they
joined
the 9th
Precinct
to
create
the
Eastern
District.
And now,
ten
years
later, a
new 5th
Precinct
building
has
opened
its
doors
with
great
fanfare
for
Detroit's
east
side
neighborhoods.

attended
the
ribbon
cutting
Wednesday,

at the

Precinct
building.
Chief
Craig
said,
"We have
made a
vow to
our
citizens
that we
were
going to
make our
neighborhoods
amongst
some of
the
safest
neighborhoods
in the
country
and
putting
our
precincts
back in
a
location
where
all
citizens
will
have
access
to them
is just
one more
step
towards
meeting
that
goal."
The 5th
Precinct
will be
providing
a wide
range of
professional
police
services
to
Detroit
citizens
and
visitors
in the
far-eastside
of the
city.
DPD
states
all
concerns
relative
to
police
services
are
taken
seriously.
One of
the
missions
will be
to
develop
ties
with the
community
and
business
sector
to
create a
different
form of
police
presence
for
non-emergency
and
recurring
quality
of life
issues.
With the
reopening,
the
department
took
another
big step
towards
putting
Police
Precincts
back
into the
neighborhoods.
The new
5th
Precinct
building
is
located
at 3500
Conner
just
south of
Mack
Avenue
on
Detroit's
east
side.
Construction
took
about a
year and
a half
to
complete.
