Detroit
DETROIT
- Five
days
before
Christmas
the
spirit
of
giving
was
definitely
in the
air at
Detroit’s
Eastern
Market
on
Thursday
morning.
There
were so
many
families
lined up
outside
of the
shed
ready to
make an
entrance
inside
to
receive
gifts
for
their
children.
According
to a
press
release,
thanks
to a
generous
contribution
from
Detroit
Pistons
Owner
Tom
Gores,
approximately
10,000
toys,
bicycles
and
helmets
will be
distributed
to
families
in
Detroit,
Flint,
Saginaw,
Bay City
and
surrounding
neighborhoods
served
by
Marines
and
volunteers
of the
Marine
Corps
Reserve
Toys for
Tots
Program
this
holiday
season.
“Getting
kids
excited
and
bringing
smiles
to their
faces is
so
important
during
the
holidays,”
said Mr.
Gores in
the
release.
“We want
to
deliver
a little
hope and
happiness
to
children
and
their
families
during
this
special
time of
year. We
launched
this
effort
12 years
ago and
have
been
working
with
Toys for
Tots for
nearly a
decade.
It’s a
great
organization
and we
are
proud to
be their
partner
and
support
the
important
work
they
do.”

(Prior
to

Mr.

supported
similar
gift-giving
programs
through
other
organizations.)
After
supporting
the
programs
as a
“Secret

for
seven
years,
Mr.
Gores
agreed
in 2013
to be
identified
in order
to
encourage
others
to join
in with
contributions
of their
own.

Patience
Thomas a
first
time
recipient,
who was
pre-selected
and
registered
through
the Toys
for Tots
program
was with
her son,
when he
chose a
few toy
cars to
take
home.
“Toys
for Tots
means a
lot to
me,”
said
Thomas.
“Especially
for
people
who
can’t
really
give
their
kids a
good
Christmas.
I really
like and
appreciate
this
event a
lot.”
The
volunteers
walked
up and
down the
aisles
making
sure
gifts
were
distributed
to the
families
in a
timely
fashion.
Earl
Cureton,
a former
member
of the
Detroit
Pistons,
now
performs
as
ambassador
to the
community
for the
Pistons,
was at
the
event
helping
out as
many
people
as
possible.
“Three
years
ago the
Gores
family
decided
to get
more
people
involved
and this
is just
a great
program,”
Cureton
said. “I
grew up
here in
the
inner
city of
Detroit
and it’s
Christmas
time and
this
gives
opportunities
for kids
who
don’t
have the
opportunity
to have
a
Christmas,
they’re
making
it
possible
for
dreams
to come
true.”
Also
at the
event
was
Duncan
Murdock
a
representative
from the
Gores
family,
who is
Holly
Gores
brother.
“It
was a
great
day,”
Murdock
said.
“To see
all the
smiling
faces of
all the
little
kids and
you can
just
feel the
joy
within
from the
families.
I
believe
every
year is
significant
and this
event is
very
important
to the
Gores
family.”
