DETROIT
- The
Strides
for
Seniors
campaign
from
September
1 to 30
will
spotlight
Detroit
senior
centers
and the
many
services
they
provide
–
everything
from
meals
and
illness
prevention
to
hustle
dance
and
zumba
classes.
With
Michiganders
over 65
likely
to
outnumber
those
under 17
by 2025
– ten
years
sooner
than the
USA as a
whole –
these
services
grow
more
essential
every
year.
Spearheaded
by the
Detroit
Area
Agency
on Aging
(DAAA)
and St.
Patrick
Center,
the
fourth
annual
Strides
will
promote
14
centers
in
Detroit,
Grosse
Pointe
Farms
and
Hamtramck
during
National
Senior
Center
month.
There
are
three
ways the
community
can
participate
•
Visiting
a
Neighborhood
Senior
Center.
It’s a
chance
to meet
wonderful
people
and
experience
exciting
activities,
classes,
dance
and
exercise
sessions
– and
even
enjoy a
nutritious
meal!
•
Attending
the Free
Health
Expo -
Friday,
Sept.
21, at
Palmer
Park.
Dozens
of
professionals
will be
on hand
from 9
AM to 1
PM –
providing
health
and
wellness
information,
and
offering
solutions
on
insurance
options,
caregiver
services,
and
other
concerns
facing
older
adults.
•
Joining
the Walk
or Dance
the same
day: One
and
three
mile
walks
offer
the
opportunity
to
experience
one of
Detroit’s
most
beautiful
places.
There’s
also a
hustle
dance
option.
Pre-registration
is just
$25 –
including
lunch
and a
t-shirt
– and
team
participation
is
encouraged.
All
proceeds
from
entry
fees,
pledges
and
donations
will
help
support
senior
centers.
DAAA
President
and
Chairperson
Paul
Bridgewater
is again
serving
as event
chair.
