DETROIT - Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams will celebrate his 50th Anniversary as pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church (HMBC) Friday, May 3, at Detroit Marriott Hotel. A very unique celebration since Pastor Adams is only the third minister in the pulpit of HMBC in its 100 year history (Hartford is a Michigan Historical site). During his tenure, he has taken the church membership from 400 members to nearly 10,000 members.

“This year we are particularly pleased as we will honor an individual whose very name and international fame is synonymous with a lifetime of achievement,” Comments Rev. Wendell Anthony, NAACP President. “He is a native Detroiter, graduate of Detroit Public Schools, former president of the Detroit Branch NAACP, and former president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Recognized by many as a lecturer, preacher, orator, and mentor, he is of course the Harvard Hooper, better known as the Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams, Senior Pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church. He will receive the James Weldon Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Dr. Adams is well known nationally for his delivery of memorable addresses in the eulogies of prominent Detroiters; Detroit Mayor Coleman Young; Rosa Parks, Mother of the Civil Rights Movement and Esther Gordy Edwards, sister of Berry Gordy, founder of Motown. NBC television personality Ellen DeGeneres aired the Thank You ending of his prayer in multi languages on her program immediately following the Rosa Parks service. The Detroit Celebration for Nelson Mandela, Pastor Adams electrified a packed Tiger Stadium with his heroic speech.

His reputation precedes him across the country. He has been featured in Ebony Magazine for his community economic recovery. Dr. Adams has lead the way to community development by purchasing commercial real estate along W. Seven Mile Rd. to launch new fast food restaurant sites such as; McDonald’s, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other businesses; Thus, creating jobs in the community.

Also on Hartford property Home Depot that provides employment and a tax base for the city and state. On other church properties Hartford established the Head Start Agency, a Tutorial Program and the Hartford Institute for Biblical Studies.

Most recently in his quest to improve the neighborhoods surrounding HMBC, Dr. Adams built the first senior citizens gated community in Detroit, known as Hartford Village. This well planned senior community with 39 independent living cottages and 45 independent 1 & 2 bedroom apartments with 24 hour security is a welcome addition to the Seven Mile -Meyers community.

In 2007, Dr. Adams was selected as the first professor of the Practice of Ethics and of Ministry at Harvard University. His full teaching schedule at Harvard did not prevent his weekly delivery of his sole –saving sermons at Hartford.
