will
proudly
continue
an
ongoing
tradition
of
bringing
some of
the
finest
classical
music
and
musicians
to the
community.
Kenneth
Thompkins,
trombone
and
Zhihua
Tang on
piano
from the
Detroit
Symphony
Orchestra
(DSO)
will
perform
on
Sunday,
February18
at
Hartford
Church
at the
close of
the
7:30am
Service
(9:15am)
and the
beginning
of the
11am
service
(10:30am).
Music
performed
will
include
African
American
Spirituals
and
classics
to
highlight
the
upcoming
DSO
Classical
Roots
Concert
Saturday,
March 3,
2018.
This
year
celebrating
the 40th
Anniversary,
the
DSO’s
Classical
Roots
will
shine
the
spotlight
on
trailblazing
tenor
and
educator
George
Shirley
and
innovative
leader
and
academic
Earl
Lewis,
President
of The
Andrew
W.
Mellon
Foundation,
at the
40th
Anniversary
Classical
Roots
Celebration.
Classical
Roots
honors
African-American
composers,
musicians,
and
educators
for
lifetime
achievement
and
raises
funds to
support
the
DSO’s
African-American
music
and
musician
development
programs.
Classical
Music
appreciation
is
deeply
rooted
in
Hartford
Church.
Established
in 1917
on
Detroit’s
Westside,
throughout
its
history
the
church
has been
a beacon
for the
advancement
of the
community,
with
classical
music
being an
important
focus.
In the
1940s
Hartford
presented
the
world
famous
tenor,
Roland
Hayes,
to an
integrated
audience
at the
Church.
Paul
Robeson,
bass
soloist
and
actor,
appeared
several
times at
Hartford.
More
recent
events
include;
the
first
ever
Detroit
Symphony
Orchestra
community
concert
at
Hartford,
the
University
of
Michigan
Male
Glee
Club
will
perform
in
March,
and of
course
66 years
of
preforming
Handel’s
Messiah
each
year as
a free
holiday
gift to
the
community.
The
performance
of this
dynamic
