Murals In The Market Mural 2019 Festival returns to the Eastern Market District in Detroit

DETROIT - 1xRUN is proud to announce the event lineup for Detroit’s premier mural festival, Murals In The Market 2019, which was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the "Best Mural Festivals Around the World”. Join us for the critically acclaimed mural festival as we return to Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market District for the fifth consecutive year! Featuring dozens of artists and live mural paintings throughout Eastern Market, Murals In The Market will offer artist talks, lectures, cultural events and more, plus a massive family-friendly Family Reunion Block Party featuring DJ Premier!

Beginning on September 14th, Murals In The Market and partners will bring the legendary DJ Premier to Detroit for the Family Reunion Block Party, a family-friendly, all-ages event in the heart of Eastern Market. Supporting musical acts include J Rocc, Dez Andres, Amp Fiddler, Big Shoes featuring Big Tone + House Shoes, Super J, Superdre, John Arnold & John Beltran, and Efe Bes! The Family Reunion Block Party will offer a curated selection of artist-driven activations, featuring local artists, vendors and more, as well as food trucks and full-service bars. A limited amount of discounted presale tickets are now available here.

Often hailed as “The Godfather of Street Art”, New York City artist Ron English will descend upon Murals In The Market 2019, kicking off his politically-charged Wall to Wall Popaganda PopMart Pop Up Tour on September 18th! In response to Trump’s push for a border barrier, artist Ron English will be building his own “wall”. Come by for a chance to pick up limited-edition sculptures, prints, toys and tons more from Ron English’s Popaganda Empire.

Murals In The Market will also feature a new 3D public installation from Tiff Massey paying homage to legendary Detroit artist Dave Philpot, as well as a larger-than-life parade from Dennis McNett that will be happening throughout Eastern Market all week long! In addition, we will welcome Detroit’s own Ben Hall, who will be creating a new 70-foot sculptural installation that will wrap around Eastern Market’s “Roundhouse.” Finally, Ryan Doyle will unveil his latest sculpture “Phoenix Rising”, which will be placed at the former Detroit Water & Sewer Building. Fans can also catch McNett and Doyle at an artist talk discussing their work on September 20th at MITM HQ.

After last year’s wildly successful Community Push Skate Alley, director Derrick Dykas and his team will build a temporary skate park from the ground up, which will fill an entire alley in Eastern Market throughout the week of the festival. The skate park will be free and open to the public starting September 16th.

Opening September 17th, the 5th Annual 1xRUN Murals In The Market Exhibition will kick off at MITM HQ, featuring new original artwork and limited-edition prints from a wide range of talented artists who have participated in the festival since its inception in 2015! In addition, 1xRUN will be showcasing its exclusive collection of fine art prints, skate decks, blotter art, hand-painted multiples, and more from its vault of over 2,500 releases. Come see why 1xRUN has become the world’s leading publisher of fine art editions, turning fans into collectors since 2010!

All week long, artists will be painting their murals. Fans can explore Eastern Market’s Historic District on their own with a Mural Map, or they can join a group tour with RiDetroit and Jason Hall for official walking and bicycle tours. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to walk and ride with the MITM team, hear the stories behind the artwork, and get an inside look into how Detroit’s Eastern Market grew one of the best-known collections of street art in the world.

The Siren Hotel will welcome all participating artists travelling from out of town, giving them a special taste of Downtown Detroit, while still being only minutes away Eastern Market. We will also welcome Pleasantrees as one of our sponsors this year, joining us to provide safe and clean alternative medicines.

Five years in the making, Murals In The Market continues to expand Eastern Market’s walkable footprint. Boasting more than 200 public murals throughout the Market District, Murals In The Market has drawn attention from visitors to buildings that otherwise may have gone unnoticed or underutilized. Foundations and sponsors from Michigan and elsewhere will help make 2019 a memorial year. Organizations supporting 1xRUN’s Murals In The Market are: Knight Foundation, Eastern Market Corporation, Motor City Paint, Montana Cans, Brooklyn Outdoor, Aptemal, Quicken Loans, Paxahau, Community Push, Faygo, Siren Hotel, Detroit Design Core, RiDetroit, and Electrify, Red Bull, Detroit Hustles Harder & Pleasentrees.

The Family Reunion Block Party is presented by 1xRUN, Paxahau, The Crofoot & Detroit Hustles Harder and sponsored by Red Bull, Faygo, Quicken Loans, Pleasentrees, Absolut Vodka, Jameson Whiskey, Avion Tequila and Collective Arts Brewing.
