talk
show
host,
community
activist
and
beloved
coach
passed
away
while on
news
assignment
in
Chicago
on
Sunday
at age
61.
Russell
was a
35-year
media
veteran
in
several
different
roles,
including
news
reporter,
anchor,
talk-show
host,
columnist
and
public
relations
director
for the
Detroit
Tigers.
He also
became
Detroit’s
first
African-American
Press
Secretary
to
former
Detroit
Mayor
Dennis
Archer
in 1994.
Greg
Russell,
Cliff's
brother,
says he
was
"always
a happy
guy, no
matter
what was
going
on." "This
caught
everybody
by
surprise,"
Greg
said.
"He'd
had
several
heart
attacks
before,
but
always
pulled
through."
Greg
described
his
brother
as a man
who
"loved
Detroit,
even
when
times
were
very,
very
bleak."
"He was
a great
guy with
a big
smile,"
Greg
said.
"Every
time I
saw him,
I got
this
great
big bear
hug."
The
Detroit
Tigers
club
statement
on the
passing
of Cliff
Russell:

Detroit
Tigers
are
saddened
to learn
of the
passing
of Cliff
Russell.
We
extend
our
deepest
sympathies
to his
family
and
friends
during
this
time.”
Cliff
won
several
state,
local
and
national
awards
during
his time
on
Detroit
radio
and TV
and most
recently,
Russell
hosted
“The
Cliff
Russell
Show” on
910AM.
He was
also a
graduate
of Wayne
State
University.
Mr.
Russell
is
survived
by a
loving
wife,
three
sons,
three
daughters,
two
step-sons,
seven
grandchildren
and a
host of
extended
family
and
friends.
