National Association of Black Journalists convention kicks off today

More than 3,000 expected for conference, job fair

DETROIT, MI - From Tichina Arnold discussing activism to Tyler Perry hosting a master class to CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux moderating a civil rights panel, the National Association of Black Journalists’ August 1-5 convention #NABJ18: Driving Journalism, Technology & Trust at the Detroit Marriott will address issues prevalent in the community.

Approximately 3,000 journalists are expected to come to Detroit for the convention, along with celebrity panelists such as Arnold and Perry. Arnold will be hosting When Art Meets Activism on August 2, 3:45-5:15 p.m., and Perry will host his master class on August 3, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Other guests that will be there include Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., Dr. Ben Chavis, Shaun King, and many others. The event also features one of the industry’s largest job fairs.

“NABJ and its affiliate chapters across the country have a rich and proud history of training journalists," said Thomas, the WWJ reporter. “... We’re looking forward to seeing what great stories students will uncover here in Detroit!”

The convention is taking place in a building owned by a leading corporation in the Motor City: “General Motors is proud to be headquartered in the heart of Detroit and serve as the venue for the 43rd Annual NABJ Convention & Career Fair,” said Lester Booker Jr., GM’s corporate giving communications lead.

“As General Motors works toward a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, we recognize the importance of diversity and its role in the ever-changing global marketplace,” Booker said. “Partnerships such as this afford us the opportunity to fund and support initiatives to help make the Motor City an attractive place to learn, work and thrive.”
