Mexicantown-Hubbard
Communities
is the
first
neighborhood
commercial
district
in the
City of
Detroit
to
receive
a Main
Street
designation
DETROIT
– The
Southwest
Detroit
Business
Association
(SDBA)
and the
Mexicantown
Community
Development
Corporation
(MCDC)
are
pleased
to
announce
that the
Mexicantown-Hubbard
Communities
(MHC)
has
received
a formal
designation
from the
State of
Michigan
and its
Michigan
Main
Street
Program.
MHC is
the
first
neighborhood
commercial
district
in
Detroit
to be
selected
for this
designation,
which
provides
access
to
technical
assistance
and
community
development
tools to
help
drive
revitalization
in the
area.
The
announcement
was
jointly
made
today by
SDBA
President
Robert
Dewaelsche
and MCDC
Executive
Director
Raymond
Lozano.
A
Mexicantown
Main
Street
Kick-Off
and
Announcement
event
will be
held
from 6
to 8
p.m. on
Thursday,
April 19
at the
Mexicantown
Latino
Cultural
Center
at the
Detroit
Mexicantown
Welcome
Center
Building
located
at 2835
Bagley
Ave.,
Detroit.
The
event,
which is
open to
the
public,
will
include
an
overview
of the
Main
Street
Approach®
and a
special
announcement
regarding
the
selection
of the
Mexicantown
district
as a
Select
Level
Michigan
Main
Street
Community.
“The
Southwest
Detroit
Business
Association
has
always
played
an
integral
role in
bringing
the
community
together
with
events
and
activities
designed
to
enhance
the
quality
of life
for our
residents
and
serve as
an
economic
boost
for
businesses,”
said
Dewaelsche.
“Through
the many
opportunities
provided
by the
Main
Street
Program,
Mexicantown
will
become
revitalized,
stronger,
and
remain
focused
on its
future
while
honoring
its
past.”
The
Michigan
Main
Street
Program
will
provide
the MHC
with
specialized
training
within
the
local
community
that
includes
implementing
the Main
Street
approach
to
revitalization.
The
Michigan
Main
Street
staff,
along
with
other
professionals,
will
work
closely
with MHC
leadership
to train
its
Advisory
Board
and
committees,
recruit
volunteers
and get
the
program
up and
running.
In
addition,
MHC will
receive
specialized
trainings
valued
at more
than
$100,000
designed
to help
revitalize
the
traditional
Mexicantown
Commercial
District.

engaging
its
community
stakeholders
in the
revitalization
process,
and by
effectively
working
as a
team on
a
unified
vision
for
success,
the
Mexicantown-Hubbard
Communities
are
excited
and
grateful

receive
this
designation
by the
MEDC-MI
Michigan
Main
Street
Program,”
said
Lozano.
The
MHC’s
2018
Priorities
include:
the
preservation
and
promotion
of the
Mexicantown
Business
District
and its
brand;
beautification
of the
Mexicantown-Corktown
viaduct;
crime
prevention
(The
City of
Detroit’s
Green
Light
Project);
supporting
the
implementation
of
events
that
represent
the
cultural
heritage
of the
area;
continuing
the
improvement
of
commercial
facades;
installing
welcoming
and
wayfinding
signage;
and
continue
to
provide
Small
Business
Technical
Assistance
to
Mexicantown
businesses.

of the
MHC
Commercial
District
(Mexicantown)
are W.
Vernor
Hwy.
from
Clark
St. on
the west
to 18th
St. on
the
east,
and
Bagley
Ave.
from
24th St.
on the
west to
16th St.
on the
east.
The
MHC Main
Street
Program
was
active
from
2002-2008
under
the
Detroit
Mayor’s
Office
of
Neighborhood
Commercial
Revitalization
(ONCR)
Program.
ONCR was
a
collaborative
effort
between
government,
foundations,
community
organizations
and the
private
sector
as a
catalyst
for
improvement
of
Detroit’s
commercial
strips.
In 2002,
the MHC
was a
designated
a
Re$tore
Detroit
Program,
by the
Detroit
Mayor’s
Office
of
Neighborhood
and
Commercial
Revitalization
(ONCR)
to
receive
grants
and
technical
assistance
to hire
commercial
revitalization
professionals,
create
cultural
events,
promote
the
area,
improve
facades
and
recruit
and
revitalize
new
businesses.
Then in
2005,
the MHC
was
designated
a Main
Street
Program
by the
National
Main
Street
Center.
As of
July
2016,
the SDBA
and MCDC
have
engaged
community
stakeholders
to
identify
and
implement
a
unified
vision
for
success
in the
revitalization
of the
Mexicantown
Business
District.
