Southwest Detroit's Mexicantown-Hubbbard Communities wins Main St. designation from State of MI

Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities is the first neighborhood commercial district in the City of Detroit to receive a Main Street designation

DETROIT – The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) and the Mexicantown Community Development Corporation (MCDC) are pleased to announce that the Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities (MHC) has received a formal designation from the State of Michigan and its Michigan Main Street Program. MHC is the first neighborhood commercial district in Detroit to be selected for this designation, which provides access to technical assistance and community development tools to help drive revitalization in the area. The announcement was jointly made today by SDBA President Robert Dewaelsche and MCDC Executive Director Raymond Lozano.

A Mexicantown Main Street Kick-Off and Announcement event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 19 at the Mexicantown Latino Cultural Center at the Detroit Mexicantown Welcome Center Building located at 2835 Bagley Ave., Detroit. The event, which is open to the public, will include an overview of the Main Street Approach® and a special announcement regarding the selection of the Mexicantown district as a Select Level Michigan Main Street Community.

“The Southwest Detroit Business Association has always played an integral role in bringing the community together with events and activities designed to enhance the quality of life for our residents and serve as an economic boost for businesses,” said Dewaelsche. “Through the many opportunities provided by the Main Street Program, Mexicantown will become revitalized, stronger, and remain focused on its future while honoring its past.”

The Michigan Main Street Program will provide the MHC with specialized training within the local community that includes implementing the Main Street approach to revitalization. The Michigan Main Street staff, along with other professionals, will work closely with MHC leadership to train its Advisory Board and committees, recruit volunteers and get the program up and running. In addition, MHC will receive specialized trainings valued at more than $100,000 designed to help revitalize the traditional Mexicantown Commercial District.

“By successfully engaging its community stakeholders in the revitalization process, and by effectively working as a team on a unified vision for success, the Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities are excited and grateful to receive this designation by the MEDC-MI Michigan Main Street Program,” said Lozano.

The MHC’s 2018 Priorities include: the preservation and promotion of the Mexicantown Business District and its brand; beautification of the Mexicantown-Corktown viaduct; crime prevention (The City of Detroit’s Green Light Project); supporting the implementation of events that represent the cultural heritage of the area; continuing the improvement of commercial facades; installing welcoming and wayfinding signage; and continue to provide Small Business Technical Assistance to Mexicantown businesses.

The boundaries of the MHC Commercial District (Mexicantown) are W. Vernor Hwy. from Clark St. on the west to 18th St. on the east, and Bagley Ave. from 24th St. on the west to 16th St. on the east.

The MHC Main Street Program was active from 2002-2008 under the Detroit Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (ONCR) Program. ONCR was a collaborative effort between government, foundations, community organizations and the private sector as a catalyst for improvement of Detroit’s commercial strips.

In 2002, the MHC was a designated a Re$tore Detroit Program, by the Detroit Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood and Commercial Revitalization (ONCR) to receive grants and technical assistance to hire commercial revitalization professionals, create cultural events, promote the area, improve facades and recruit and revitalize new businesses. Then in 2005, the MHC was designated a Main Street Program by the National Main Street Center.

As of July 2016, the SDBA and MCDC have engaged community stakeholders to identify and implement a unified vision for success in the revitalization of the Mexicantown Business District.
