released
a
statement,
saying,
"At
approximately
2:45
a.m. on
Thursday
Oct. 17,
2019,
Congressman
Elijah
E.
Cummings
(MD-07)
passed
away at
Johns
Hopkins
Hospital
due to
complications
concerning
longstanding
health
challenges."
Cummings
was 68.
He spent
months
in a
hospital
last
year,
first,
for his
heart,
then an
infection
in his
knee.
A
fixture
in
Maryland
politics
was more
widely
known
across
the
country
as the
chairman
of the
House
Committee
on
Oversight
and
Reform.
In
an
exclusive
interview
with 11
News'
Deborah
Weiner
in
February,
Cummings
said he
believes
his
leading
the
committee
during
the
Michael
Cohen
hearing
would
mark his
legacy.
Cummings
grew up
the son
of
Pentecostal
ministers.
Prayer
is his
GPS,
guiding
him
where
and how
to go.
"I
will
pray
that God
takes us
to a
higher
ground,"
Cummings
said in
February.
Cummings'
district
encompasses
Baltimore
City and
Howard
County.
Cummings
often
finds
himself
in the
middle.
A
painting
in his
office
harkens
back to
Baltimore's
riots of
2015,
when he
was seen
as a
peacemaker.
