DETROIT--
A new
basketball
venue is
scheduled
to open
tonight
(Friday,
November
5,) on
the
campus
of Wayne
State
University
and it
already
has had
a long
and
storied
journey.
Located
on
Warren
avenue
just
east of
Trumbull,
a
different
type of
building
was
originally
planned.
It was
intended
as an
ice-arena.
But that
was then
and this
is now.
A
partnership
between
WSU and
the
Detroit
Pistons
‘G’
League
team,
the
Motor
City
Cruise
fast-
tracked
this
high
tech
facility.
The
Cruise
will
begin
their
first
season
in the
‘G’
League
at the
site as
well.
The
Motor
City
Cruise
will
host the
Wisconsin
Herd on
Nov. 11
and Nov
12, at 7
p.m.
The
Wayne
State
men’s
team is
defending
Great
Lakes
Intercollegiate
Athletic
Conference
champions
and went
to the
NCAA
Division
II
tournament
last
season.
The
University
of
Michigan
will be
the
opening
opponent
for an
exhibition
game.
Wayne
State
coach
David
Greer is
entering
his 21st
seasons
at WSU.
Coach
Greer
had
previously
said,
“It
certainly
has been
a long
time
coming
(the new
arena)
and the
partnership
with the
Detroit
Pistons
made it
happen.
To have
a
Division
I
program….be
a part
of our
celebration
of
opening
our new
arena….this
will
make it
a big
event
for our
young
men. I
want to
thank
Michigan
Coach
Juwan
Howard
for
helping
to make
this
happen.”
Greer
was
2020-21
GLIAC
Coach of
the
Year,
and he
has both
of his
sharpshooting
guards
returning.
Brailen
Neely
and
Darian
Owens-White
both
received
post-season
honors
last
year.
Greer
believes
the new
basketball
arena
will
energize
the
western
edge of
the
campus.
Greer
added,
“When
you
think of
Detroit,
you
think of
basketball.”
The
70,000
square-foot
building
is air
conditioned
and It
can
accommodate
just
over
3,000-plus
and cost
somewhere
in the
vicinity
of 25
Million.
The
project
also
added
some
adjacent
improvements
to the
WSU
athletic
footprint.
Currently
it will
be known
as the
WSU
Fieldhouse.
Next
weekend,
November
13 and
14, the
Warriors
women's
squad
hosts a
four-team
tournament
that
features
Lake
Erie,
Walsh
and
Ferris
State.
The
Women
Warriors
open the
1921-22
season
on the
road
against
Division
I,
University
of
Detroit
Mercy at
historic
Calihan
Hall.
The
President
of WSU,
M. Roy
Wilson
and
Piston’s
owner
Tom
Gores
deserve
a salute
to job
well
done.
The
Detroit
Pistons
and the
Cruise
will
practice
at
another
new
facility
in
Detroit,
the
Henry
Ford
Pistons
Performance
Center,
which is
very
close by
in ‘The
New
Center
Area’.
