- The
Detroit
Jazz
Festival
returns
to Hart
Plaza
this
Labor
Day
weekend,
bringing
four
days of
free
performances
to
downtown
Detroit
from
Sept.
4-7.
The
festival,
billed
as the
world’s
largest
free
jazz
festival,
is
expected
to
attract
hundreds
of
thousands
of
visitors
and
continue
a
long-standing
Detroit
tradition
celebrating
the
city’s
deep
jazz
heritage.
Organizers
said all
major
performance
stages
will be
located
within
Hart
Plaza
this
year.
The
consolidated
layout
is
intended
to
improve
crowd
flow and
allow
attendees
to move
more
easily
between
sets.
Chris
Collins,
president
and
artistic
director
of the
Detroit
Jazz
Festival
Foundation,
said the
updated
footprint
will
create a
more
unified
experience
while
helping
audiences
discover
artists
they may
not
otherwise
see.
The 2026
lineup
includes
Ron
Carter,
Bob
James,
Ravi
Coltrane,
Kurt
Elling
with
Yellowjackets,
Artemis
and
artist-in-residence
Joe
Lovano,
who will
appear
in
several
performances
over the
weekend.
Additional
programming
will
take
place at
the
Detroit
Jazz
Hall in
Wayne
State
University’s
Gretchen
C.
Valade
Jazz
Center,
with
student
ensembles
and
late-night
performances
on the
schedule.
Festival
officials
also
announced
revised
Hart
Plaza
operating
hours
and a
new rule
barring
coolers
from the
venue,
citing
public
safety
and
crowd-movement
concerns.
Now in
its 47th
year,
the
Detroit
Jazz
Festival
remains
among
the
city’s
most
prominent
free
cultural
events.
Performances
also
will be
livestreamed
for
viewers
unable
to
attend
in
person.
