The body
of Pope
Francis
has been
moved
from
Casa
Santa
Marta to
St.
Peter’s
Basilica,
where he
will lie
in state
for the
faithful
to pay
their
respects
until
his
funeral
on
Saturday.
The Rite
of
Translation
took
place on
Wednesday
morning,
led by
the
College
of
Cardinals
in Rome.
Cardinal
Kevin
Farrell,
Camerlengo
of the
Holy
Roman
Church,
presided
over the
liturgical
rite,
offering
prayers
for Pope
Francis
and
expressing
gratitude
for his
12-year
ministry.
A solemn
procession
led the
Pope’s
coffin
through
the
Vatican
to St.
Peter’s
Basilica,
where
over
20,000
people
had
gathered
to pay
their
respects.
His
coffin
was
placed
in front
of the
Altar of
the
Confession
as Latin
prayers
and
hymns
were
chanted.
The
Basilica
will
remain
open for
mourners
until
Friday
evening.
The rite
of
sealing
the
Pope’s
coffin
will
take
place on
Friday
night,
presided
over by
Cardinal
Farrell.
The
Funeral
Mass
will be
held in
St.
Peter’s
Square
on
Saturday
morning,
led by
Cardinal
Giovanni
Battista
Re, and
attended
by
religious
leaders
and
faithful
from
around
the
world.
Following
the
Mass,
Pope
Francis’
body
will be
taken to
St. Mary
Major
for
burial.
