VATICAN CITY - More than 250,000 people from all walks of life gathered in St. Peter’s Square and its surrounding areas on Saturday morning to bid a solemn farewell to Pope Francis at his Requiem Mass. An additional 150,000 lined the streets of Rome, watching in reverence as his coffin was carried in procession to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

The profound and moving ceremony was led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, accompanied by some 250 Cardinals, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, priests, and consecrated religious, all united in their final tribute.

In his homily, the Dean of the College of Cardinals reflected on the defining moments of Pope Francis’ remarkable and deeply felt twelve years of Petrine Ministry. He spoke of the Pope’s unwavering closeness to the people, the spontaneity of his gestures, and above all, his immense love for the Church—one that he strived to keep open to all until his very last breath.
