Mayor Sheffield Hails Detroit’s Comeback, More Residents Move In, US Census Finds

DETROIT - Mayor Mary Sheffield addressed the city’s newest population estimate after the U.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday that Detroit has once again posted year‑over‑year growth, continuing a trend that began only recently after decades of decline. The latest estimate shows Detroit gaining residents for the third straight year, a reversal that city officials say reflects both renewed investment and stronger efforts to keep longtime Detroiters in their homes.

According to the Census Bureau’s annual update, Detroit’s population increased again in 2025, marking another step forward for a city that had not recorded sustained growth since the 1950s. Sheffield said the numbers confirm what many residents have been seeing in their own neighborhoods: more occupied homes, more construction activity, and more families choosing to move into the city rather than out of it.

Sheffield said the growth is not limited to one area but is occurring across multiple districts, driven by new housing developments, the rehabilitation of long‑vacant properties, and programs aimed at helping residents buy or stay in their homes. She also pointed to Detroit’s affordability as a major factor, saying the city continues to attract people looking for lower housing costs compared with other major urban areas.

Residents in several neighborhoods have reported an increase in new families moving in and formerly empty houses being restored. Community leaders say the shift has been noticeable, especially in areas where redevelopment projects have been underway for several years.

Sheffield highlighted the city’s progress while also acknowledging that the estimates are not final counts. Still, she said the continued rise in population is a sign that Detroit’s long‑term recovery is gaining momentum and that the city is becoming a place where more people want to live, work, and stay.
