Wayne
County
Executive
and
Urban
Alliance
of
Mich call
to end
Voter
Suppression
WAYNE
COUNTY,
MI –
Wayne
County
Executive
Warren
Evans
and the
Urban
Alliance
of
Michigan
are set
to host
a press
conference
on April
20, 2021
at 1
p.m. on
the
stairs
of the
State
Capitol
building
as a
stance
for
democracy
to call
for an
end to
voter
suppression.
Evans
will be
joined
by
Michigan
State
Representative
Sarah
Anthony,
Pastor
Solomon
Kinloch
Jr.,
Detroit
City
Clerk
Janice
Winfrey,
as well
all 7
Black
mayors
in the
State of
Michigan
representing
Benton
Harbor,
Highland
Park,
Flint,
Pontiac,
Eastpointe,
Muskegon
Heights,
and
Inkster.
Executive
Evans’
call-to-action
comes in
response
to
nation
and
statewide
efforts
from
Republican
lawmakers
to pass
legislation
to
hinder
voting
rights
that
disproportionately
effect
voters
of
color,
the
elderly,
and
rural
residents
that
would
make the
right to
vote
multiple
times
harder.
Even
with
Governor
Whitmer’s
vocal
statements
on
planning
to veto
any
voter
limiting
bills,
Michigan
Republican
leadership
plans to
bypass
the
Governor’s
veto
power by
using a
voter-driven
petition
process
to push
new
voting
restrictions
into
law.
“The
right to
vote is
sacred,
and yet,
in
recent
months,
over 250
pieces
of voter
suppression
legislation
have
been
introduced
in state
legislatures
across
the
country
in a
concerted
Republican
effort.”
Wayne
County
Executive
Evans
stated.
“It is
shameful
that
Michigan
Republicans
in the
Legislature
are
attempting
to ram
through
dozens
of
blatantly
racist
voter
suppression
bills to
prevent
eligible
voters
from
participating
in our
democracy.”
he
continues.
Wayne
County
CEO
Warren
Evans
and the
Urban
Alliance
of
Michigan
are
extremely
serious
about
combating
the
legislative
actions
of the
Michigan
Republicans
and will
bring
awareness
to the
issues
that are
taking
place
behind
the
House
doors.
The most
recent
Presidential
election
has
shown
all that
the
Republican
party
will do
to
silence
eligible
voting
citizens
and
discredit
the
voices
of those
practicing
their
rights
to
contribute
to
democracy
of the
American
political
system.
“The
disturbing
acts and
great
lengths
that are
being
taken by
Michigan’s
Republican
lawmakers
to
further
create
barriers
to
voting
access
is
disheartening
to see.”
says
Benton
Harbor
Mayor
Marcus
Muhammad.
He adds,
“Our job
as
political
leaders
is to
advocate
and
heighten
the
voices
of our
constituents,
and
these
current
actions
by our
colleagues
on the
other
side of
the
political
aisle
are
doing
the very
opposite
of
that.”
The
press
conference
on April
20th
will
also
feature
other
members
of the
Urban
Alliance
of
Michigan
that
contains
urban
community
leaders
from
around
the
state,
as every
region
of the
State
will be
represented
these
efforts
to
prevent
voting
restricting
bills to
be
passed
by
Michigan
Republicans.
