Wayne County Treasurer’s Office petitions Court to stop property tax foreclosures

DETROIT, MI - Citing the continued economic impact being felt by property owners due to the COVID-19 crisis, Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree on Thursday petitioned the 3rd Circuit Court to stop foreclosures of occupied residential and commercial properties in 2021. The motion filed with the Court requested that the redemption period be extended to March 31, 2022.

A similar request was granted in March of 2020 when Sabree asked that all properties be withheld from foreclosure.

“Our number one priority remains keeping people in their homes, and too many Wayne County taxpayers are still suffering significant economic hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis,” Sabree said. “Knowing that our recovery will take some time, we want to make some allowances in light of the pandemic.”

Approximately 2,400 owner-occupied homes and 4,100 non-owner occupied residential properties are facing foreclosure, along with 178 occupied commercial properties, the Treasurer’s Office indicated Thursday. All homeowners must still make property tax payments, Sabree noted.

All unoccupied structures and vacant land subject to foreclosure can avoid foreclosure by making the required payment(s) by May 14, 2021.

The Wayne County Treasurer’s Office has several options to help residents stay in their homes, including the Pay As You Stay program and payment plans.
