DETROIT
- The
demolition
process
has
begun on
the
former
Hannan
Memorial
YMCA
located
at 10401
E.
Jefferson
Ave. on
Detroit’s
east
side.
The
building
has been
left
vacant
for more
than two
decades
and has
become
severely
dilapidated.
The roof
has been
compromised,
and
falling
bricks
and
debris
pose
safety
hazards
to the
community.
Therefore,
the
decision
to
demolish
the
Hannan
Memorial
YMCA was
made to
ensure
the
safety
of
residents
and pave
the way
for a
safer
environment.
Although
the
structure
holds
sentimental
value
for many
Detroiters,
the
initiative
aligns
with the
broader
vision
of
removing
blight
and
encouraging
redevelopment
in
Detroit.
The City
of
Detroit
is
committed
to
enhancing
the
quality
of life
for all
residents
and
visitors.
The
vacant
land
resulting
from the
demolition
presents
an
opportunity
for
innovative
structures
that
contribute
to the
city's
growth
and
prosperity.
LaJuan
Counts,
director
of the
Detroit
Construction
&
Demolition
Department,
acknowledges
the
building's
historical
significance
and the
emotional
connection
that
residents
have
with it.
However,
the
current
state of
the
building
demands
decisive
action
to
ensure
the
safety
of the
community.
The
demolition
of the
former
Hannan
Memorial
YMCA
began on
Monday,
Feb. 12,
and will
take
several
weeks to
complete.
