Mayor-elect
Mary
Sheffield
has
named
her
longtime
chief of
staff,
Brian
White,
as
Detroit’s
deputy
mayor,
selecting
the
veteran
policy
professional
to help
lead her
incoming
administration.
White
has
worked
closely
with
Sheffield
for more
than a
decade,
first
when she
served
on the
City
Council
and
later
during
her
tenure
as
council
president.
In his
new
role, he
will
assist
in
overseeing
city
operations,
advancing
policy
priorities,
and
managing
relations
with
state
and
federal
partners
as
Sheffield
prepares
to take
office
next
year.
“Brian
has been
my chief
of staff
for more
than a
decade
and I’ve
seen
firsthand
his
unwavering
commitment
to the
people
of
Detroit,”
Sheffield
said in
a
statement.
“He
understands
that the
work of
governing
is about
the
people,
and he
shares
my
vision
for an
administration
that
listens,
learns
and
leads
with
compassion.”
White
played a
key role
in
helping
Sheffield
push for
reforms
in
affordable
housing,
economic
development,
property
tax
relief,
and
ethics
and
transparency
measures.
Prior to
his work
in city
government,
he
served
in
several
advocacy
and
policy
positions,
including
State
Director
for
Michigan’s
Election
Protection
initiative
during
the 2004
presidential
election,
Field
and
Political
Director
for
America
Votes
Michigan,
and
local
advocate
for the
Washington,
D.C.-based
Advancement
Project.
A
graduate
of the
University
of
Michigan
with
degrees
in

and
African
American
studies,
White
has also
worked
as a
financial
advisor
and
served
as
public
policy
manager
for the
Detroit
Branch
NAACP.

White

worked
alongside
Mayor-elect
Sheffield

White, a
longtime
city
resident,
lives in
Detroit
with his
wife,
Toi, and
their
three
children.
Sheffield
is
expected
to
announce
additional
appointments
to her
leadership
team in
the
coming
weeks.
