DETROIT, MI - Summer Discovery is a free learning program launched by Ballmer Group and United Way for Southeastern Michigan. The program aims to bridge educational gaps for K-8 students in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties by providing essential funding and support for instruction and enrichment activities during the upcoming summer. United Way for Southeastern Michigan will offer the program to students and families at no cost.

Interested schools across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties can apply as a Summer Discovery site. Grantees can create programs that resonate with the needs and interests of their students, teachers, and families. Each program funded by Summer Discovery must enhance academic skills, foster a love of learning, nurture student interests, and provide a comprehensive summer experience that benefits students and their families.

According to a survey by United Way for Southeastern Michigan, 76% of parents and 82% of community leaders agree that there are insufficient summer enrichment programs for students in the region. 68% of parents cite transportation and cost as barriers to enrolling their children in the limited available programs.

The program will offer enrichment activities that increase career exposure and interest, engage families, and provide fun learning experiences. Sites that use the Lavinia RISE curriculum are eligible for teacher training resources. Up to $2,000 per student grant can be used to introduce or enhance existing programs or reduce barriers such as transportation.

The deadline to apply for the grant is March 1, 2024. Interested schools can visit the Summer Discovery website for more details or to apply for this grant.
