Sykes,
41, of
Detroit,
was
arrested
on March
18,
2025,
and
charged
with
multiple
counts
of bank
robbery
and
related
crimes
following
two
separate
incidents.
The
arrest
was
announced
by
Cheyvoryea
Gibson,
Special
Agent in
Charge
of the
FBI in
Michigan,
alongside
Sterling
Heights
Police
Captain
Mario
Bastianelli
and
Lathrup
Village
Police
Chief
Scott
McKee.
The
first
robbery
occurred
on March
6, 2025,
at
Credit
Union
One in
Sterling
Heights.
According
to court
records,
Sykes
entered
the bank
around
11:50
a.m.,
approached
the
teller,
and
handed
over a
note
demanding
money.
When the
teller
hesitated,
he
allegedly
stated,

robbery,"

approximately

Sykes

Six
days
later,
on March
12,
2025, a
similar
incident
took
place at
a Chase
Bank in
Lathrup
Village
around
4:40
p.m.
Sykes
allegedly
presented
a
withdrawal
slip
with a
threatening
message:
"Give me
all the
money… I
have a
gun… I
will
kill
everyone
in
here."
He also
gestured
toward
his
right
side,
implying
he was
armed.
The
teller
handed
over
approximately
$3,400
before
Sykes
fled.
Witness
descriptions
and
surveillance
footage
linked
him to
both
crimes.
Special
Agent
Gibson
underscored
the
serious
nature
of bank
robberies,
emphasizing
their
traumatic
impact
on
employees
and
customers.
He
commended
law
enforcement
agencies
for
their
swift
coordination
in
apprehending
Sykes.
Captain
Bastianelli
echoed
the
sentiment,
crediting
teamwork
and
intelligence-sharing
for the
successful
investigation.
At
the time
of his
arrest,
Sykes
was on
federal
supervised
release
after
serving
time for
a 2020
bank
robbery.
If
convicted
of the
new
charges,
he faces
up to 20
years in
prison.
He
appeared
in
federal
court on
March
18,
2025,
and
remains
innocent
until
proven
guilty.
The
arrest
was the
result
of a
multi-agency
investigation
involving
the
FBI’s
Macomb
County
Gang and
Violent
Crime
Task
Force,
as well
as local
law
enforcement
agencies
from
Sterling
Heights,
Clinton
Township,
Lathrup
Village,
and
Detroit.
Additional
support
came
from the
Macomb
County
Sheriff’s
Office,
U.S.
Border
Patrol,
and
Michigan
State
Police.
The U.S.
Attorney’s
Office
for the
Eastern
District
of
Michigan
is
prosecuting
the
case.
