LOS ANGELES - The son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents at their Los Angeles home, prosecutors announced.

Nick Reiner, 32, faces special circumstances murder charges in the deaths of his father, the 78-year-old director of "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Princess Bride," and his stepmother, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, 68, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The couple's daughter discovered their bodies Sunday afternoon at the family's Brentwood home on South Chadbourne Avenue, authorities said. Emergency responders arrived at approximately 3:38 p.m.

Police arrested Nick Reiner about 9:15 p.m. Sunday in the Exposition Park neighborhood near the University of Southern California campus. Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said Reiner did not resist arrest.

Nick Reiner is being held without bail and will appear in court after receiving medical clearance, officials said.

Sources told investigators that Nick Reiner had argued with his father Saturday night at a holiday party at comedian Conan O'Brien's Los Angeles home.

The younger Reiner co-wrote the 2015 semi-autobiographical film "Being Charlie" with his father. The movie explored their relationship and Nick's struggles with substance abuse.

Hochman said mental health issues could be addressed in upcoming court proceedings if the defense presents such evidence.

Rob Reiner directed numerous Hollywood hits over four decades, including "Stand By Me," "A Few Good Men," "Misery" and "The American President." He also gained fame as an actor playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the 1970s sitcom "All in the Family."

Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and producer who had been married to the director since 1989.
