Brian
Thompson
was shot
and
killed
on
Wednesday
morning
outside
a
Manhattan
hotel
hosting
an
investor
conference.
The
incident
occurred
around
6:45
a.m. as
he
walked
alone to
the New
York
Hilton
Midtown.
Police
Commissioner
Jessica
Tisch
reported
that the
gunman
appeared
to have
been
waiting
to
target
Thompson
and that
the
attack
was not
random.
Thompson
was
struck
multiple
times
and
later
died at
a
hospital.
The
suspect,
dressed
in a
hooded
sweatshirt
and
carrying
a
distinct
gray
backpack,
fled on
foot and
then
rode an
e-bike
into
Central
Park. A
search
for the
shooter
included
police
drones,
helicopters,
and K-9
units.
UnitedHealth
Group
expressed
deep
sadness
over
Thompson's
death,
highlighting
his role
as a
respected
colleague.
Police
issued
surveillance
images
of the
suspect
and a
reward
of up to
$10,000
for
information
leading
to an
arrest.
The
shooting
disrupted
the
normally
quiet
area
just
blocks
away
from the
Rockefeller
Center
Christmas
tree
lighting,
prompting
authorities
to
assure
the
public
of
increased
security.
Investigators
found
shell
casings
near the
hotel
and a
cellphone
in the
alleyway
where
the
suspect
escaped.
Thompson's
wife
mentioned
he had
recently
received
threats,
potentially
related
to
insurance
coverage
issues.
He had
served
as CEO
for over
three
years
and was
part of
UnitedHealthcare
since
2004.
Minnesota
Governor
Tim Walz
expressed
condolences
on
Twitter,
calling
the
situation
“horrifying”
and a
significant
loss for
the
healthcare
community.
