NEW YORK - UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed on Wednesday morning outside a Manhattan hotel hosting an investor conference. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that the gunman appeared to have been waiting to target Thompson and that the attack was not random.

Thompson was struck multiple times and later died at a hospital. The suspect, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a distinct gray backpack, fled on foot and then rode an e-bike into Central Park. A search for the shooter included police drones, helicopters, and K-9 units.

UnitedHealth Group expressed deep sadness over Thompson's death, highlighting his role as a respected colleague. Police issued surveillance images of the suspect and a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.

The shooting disrupted the normally quiet area just blocks away from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, prompting authorities to assure the public of increased security. Investigators found shell casings near the hotel and a cellphone in the alleyway where the suspect escaped.

Thompson's wife mentioned he had recently received threats, potentially related to insurance coverage issues. He had served as CEO for over three years and was part of UnitedHealthcare since 2004. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed condolences on Twitter, calling the situation “horrifying” and a significant loss for the healthcare community.
