Family-friendly rodeo showcases the nation’s top African American cowboys and cowgirls

Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans to participate as Grand Marshall

BELLEVILLE, MI - The Midwest Invitational Rodeo — the nation’s top showcase of the Black cowboy/cowgirl story — will return to Wayne County Fairgrounds in mid June in partnership with Wayne County Parks. For one weekend only, Friday, June 11th and Saturday June 12th, Metro Detroiters are encouraged to experience the authentic African-American Rodeo and join in celebration of Juneteenth. Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans will participate as the Grand Marshall.

With over 50 years of rodeo production experience, Midwest Invitational Rodeo is a competitive traveling rodeo that showcases the nation’s top rodeo talents. More than 100 competitors from across the country will compete in events, including steer wrestling, calf roping, relay races, and bull riding. Additionally, the family-friendly event will feature enjoyable activities for all ages.

Prior to the rodeo which starts promptly at 7pm both days, doors will open to the public at 3pm for a festival atmosphere; of food trucks, music, product and service vendors. The American Red Cross, Michigan State 4-H program, Wayne County Parks and many other special vendors and guests will be in attendance on June 11th and June 12th. This entertainment and educational experience will be fun for the whole family.

Grounded by generations of history, the showcase celebrates African-American cowboys’ meaningful contributions to the sport. Following the Civil War, working as a cowboy was one of the few jobs available for men of color in search of economic opportunity amidst newfound freedom. That said, those who did pursue this path often faced discrimination in many American towns despite their skillset being deemed equal to their white counterparts.

“The County welcomes this partnership to bring such an incredibly energetic and vibrant event back to Metro Detroit,” County Executive Evans said. “As we commemorate so many pieces of our history, from the Tulsa Massacre to Juneteenth, it’s important that everyone take the time to learn the facets of our history that are usually ignored or glossed over in the textbooks and pop culture. Learning those lessons will ensure we not only avoid repeating similar mistakes, but also is a key guiding principle if we are to build a fairer, more equitable future for everyone.”

“The Midwest Invitational Rodeo is proud to showcase to the residents of the state of Michigan an authentic and competitive rodeo that pays homage to the African American cowboys and cowgirls that has not been properly recognized as part of our nation’s history. We enjoy preserving our heritage -- for example, our audience will learn about Bass Reeves, the first black U.S. Deputy Marshal west of the Mississippi River, and many more stories such as this. We will put together an inclusive show intended to entertain and educate attendees,” Nicole Scott, founder of Midwest Invitational Rodeo, said.
