DETROIT - The Detroit Jazz Festival, billed as the world's largest free jazz festival, will return to downtown Detroit and the Wayne State University campus for four days of stellar performances from August 29 through September 1, 2025.

The 46th annual festival will feature four stages presenting "an exciting and eclectic array of jazz luminaries in Detroit's downtown and in midtown on the campus of Wayne State University," according to Chris Collins, president and artistic director of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation.

The festival's 2025 Artist-in-Residence is acclaimed pianist and composer Jason Moran, who will anchor multiple performances throughout the weekend. Moran's appearances include a special collaboration with electronic music pioneer Jeff Mills on Friday night, a Duke Ellington tribute featuring the Detroit Jazz Festival Collegiate Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, and a closing performance with his band the Bandwagon alongside special guests Meshell Ndegeocello and Akili Bradley on Monday.

The impressive lineup spans jazz legends and emerging artists across multiple generations. Highlights include the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Kenny Barron, Hiromi's Sonicwonder, and the Branford Marsalis Quartet. The festival will also showcase the reunion of Cuban jazz masters Chucho Valdés and Paquito D'Rivera, performing together in their special Reunion Sextet.

Contemporary jazz voices are well-represented with performances by Chris Potter Trio, John Scofield Quartet, Lakecia Benjamin, and Kris Davis Trio. The festival also emphasizes Detroit's rich musical heritage through local artists and educational showcases, including performances by Detroit Jazz Queens and the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The festival will utilize four main venues: the Carhartt Amphitheater Stage, JPMorgan Chase Main Stage, Absopure Waterfront Stage, and the Detroit Jazz Hall inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University. The Jazz Hall will host special "Midtown After Hours" performances featuring intimate late-night sets.

Educational programming remains a cornerstone of the festival, with high school showcases, collegiate competitions, and performances by university jazz ensembles from Wayne State, Michigan State, and the University of Michigan.

"We are thrilled to kick off our 46th year as a free festival and continue our mission of providing inspiring jazz performances to our faithful fans around the globe without any barriers," Collins stated in announcing the full lineup.

The Detroit Jazz Festival draws significant tourism to the city, with approximately 26 percent of its audience traveling from out of state. The festival is supported by major corporate partners including Rocket Companies, Carhartt, JPMorgan Chase, and AARP, along with the Gretchen C. Valade Endowment for the Arts.

For over four decades, the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation has celebrated Detroit's pivotal role in jazz history while presenting world-class talent to audiences free of charge. The 2025 festival promises to continue this tradition with performances spanning traditional swing, bebop, fusion, Latin jazz, and contemporary experimental sounds.

Complete schedules and additional information are available at detroitjazzfest.org. All performances are free and open to the public.
