Freedom
Arts
Festival
to
Highlight
History
of
Buffalo
Soldiers
at Rouge
Park
DETROIT
- In
partnership
with the
Detroit
Parks
Coalition,
the
Friends
of Rouge
Park are
hosting
a free
event as
part of
the
Detroit
Parks
Coalition's
Freedom
Arts
Festival
series
that
connects—and
reconnects—Detroiters
to their
neighborhood
parks
through
music,
art and
storytelling
that
reflects
Detroit’s
multicultural
tapestry
and
brings
together
freedom,
racial
justice,
history
and
connection
to place
through
arts &
culture.
The
Rouge
Park
Buffalo
Soldiers
and
Blues
Freedom
Festival
will
highlight
the
history
of the
Buffalo
Soldiers,
the
all-Black
U.S.
Army
units
that
distinguished
themselves
during
westward
expansion
in the
19th
century.
The
Buffalo
Soldiers
Heritage
Association
(BSHA)
keeps
the
history
of
African
Americans
in the
military
alive by
introducing
youth in
the
community
to
horses
housed
in Rouge
Park. In
2007,
BSHA,
with
support
from the
Friends
of Rouge
Park,
worked
out an
agreement
with
city
officials
to
operate
the
Rouge
Park
barn
after
the
Detroit
Police
Mounted
Division
relocated
from
Rouge
Park.
Visitors
can feed
the
horses,
sign up
for a
horse
ride and
view the
educational
displays.
The
Rouge
Park
Buffalo
Soldiers
and
Blues
Freedom
Festival
will
bring
history
to light
with
pony
rides
and
museum
and barn
tours.
Attendees
will
also
enjoy
live
Blues
(the
traditional
color of
the
Buffalo
Soldiers
uniform)
music
from Big
Pete and
Friends.
Food
will be
provided
by
Marichona’s
Cuisine
including
Filipino
lumpia
in a nod
to the
Buffalo
Soldiers’
service
during
the
Philippine-American
War.
Family-friendly
lawn
games
including
horseshoes
and corn
hole
will
also be
available.
