DETROIT - More than 535 volunteers will gather at Wayne State University on September 11, 2025, to transform the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks into a powerful demonstration of community service by packing over 160,000 meals for Detroit families facing food insecurity.

The Detroit Meal Pack for 9/11 Day, running from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Wayne State Fieldhouse, represents one of 24 large-scale volunteer projects nationwide organized by the nonprofit 9/11 Day. All packaged meals will be donated to Forgotten Harvest for distribution throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.

"Twenty-four years later, Americans have transformed the anniversary of the September 11 attacks into the largest day of service in America," said organizers. The event coincides with Hunger Action Month, highlighting the critical need for food assistance in communities across the nation.

The timing couldn't be more important. According to Feeding America, more than 47 million Americans currently face food insecurity, with hunger affecting every county in the United States. The shelf-stable meals being assembled will provide crucial nutrition to Detroit residents struggling with food access.

This marks the second year for Detroit's participation in the national initiative. Across the country, more than 30,000 volunteers are expected to participate in 9/11 Day's signature Meal Pack events, collectively assembling over nine million meals for food-insecure Americans.

The 9/11 Day organization successfully worked with Congress and the President to establish September 11 as a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" under federal law in 2009. What began as a grassroots effort in 2002 has grown into the largest day of charitable service in U.S. history, with more than 30 million Americans participating annually through volunteering, charitable giving, and community service.

The national Meal Pack Program receives sponsorship from AmeriCorps, the federal agency that oversees national service programs throughout the United States.

When: Thursday, September 11, 2025, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Where: Wayne State Fieldhouse, 1290 W. Warren Ave., Detroit, MI 48201

Note: Volunteer positions for this event are filled and this is not a public call for additional volunteers.
