DETROIT - Downtown Detroit will explode with color tonight as the city hosts its 68th Annual Ford Fireworks display, one of America's largest pyrotechnic shows, lighting up the Detroit River skyline starting at approximately 10 p.m.

The event theme is "Detroit! Go for Launch!" and is produced by The Parade Company in partnership with Ford Motor Company. The show features more than 10,000 pyrotechnic effects launched from three barges on the Detroit River and runs approximately 24 minutes. The event is free for the public, and WDIV-Local 4 and Local 4+ will broadcast the show live, with free outside-streaming available for viewers outside the Detroit area.

Primary downtown viewing is at Hart Plaza located at 1 Hart Plaza. Additional official viewing areas include Spirit Plaza, Erma Henderson Park, and Belle Isle, which opens at 2 p.m. and reaches capacity around 7 p.m. Viewing from MacArthur Bridge is not permitted.

An emergency 8 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors 17 and younger was approved by the Detroit City Council. Youth must be with an adult age 21 or older in designated fireworks zones. Violators will be taken to the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center while parents are contacted.

Road closures begin at 6 p.m. on Woodward Avenue with no northbound or southbound traffic from Park and Witherell, all streets south of Fort and west of Woodward, and all streets south of Congress and east of Woodward. City garages open at 6 a.m. for parking, including the Ford Underground Garage at 30 E. Jefferson for $5, closing at 1 a.m., and the Eastern Market Garage at 2727 Riopelle St for $10, closing at 11 p.m. DDOT operates routes 5, 6, 9, 40, 52, and 67 from 5 to 11 p.m. to Bricktown People Mover Station, and the Detroit People Mover runs from 6:30 a.m. to midnight with free rides.

The Riverwalk is closed entirely, along with AB Ford Park, Cullen Plaza, Dennis Archer Greenway, Dequindre Cut from Eastern Market to Atwater, and 15 other parks. Tens of thousands of spectators are expected to gather for this summer staple, with Belle Isle reaching capacity just before 7 p.m. and Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza hitting capacity after 8 p.m. based on past years. Parents of lost children can find them at Huntington Place, DPD's Third or Fourth Precinct, or the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center.
