DETROIT — The City of Detroit announced Tuesday that its annual Halloween in the D celebration will return this month with expanded activities across the city, including a new block club decorating contest for 2025.

Mayor Mike Duggan and city officials outlined plans for the eighth annual event at a news conference held at Chandler Park Field House on Oct. 7, detailing activities scheduled for Oct. 25, Oct. 31, and Nov. 8.

"When we started Halloween in the D in 2018, we knew it would be well-received. Now it has grown into a cherished tradition, providing fun for thousands of children in a family-friendly and safe environment," Duggan said. "We are so grateful to our City departments, sponsors and volunteers who make this annual event a highlight of the year."

New Decorating Contest Debuts

The city is inviting neighborhoods and block clubs to participate in a new Halloween decorating contest, encouraging residents to transform their streets with pumpkins, cobwebs, ghosts, and goblins. Winning blocks will receive bragging rights and prizes.
The initiative reflects the event's growing popularity since its 2018 debut. Last year, Halloween in the D attracted more than 30,000 attendees, distributed over 1 million pieces of candy, and engaged more than 700 volunteers. Corporate and individual donations totaled $104,000.

Halloween Night Activities

On Oct. 31, all 11 Detroit Police precincts and 10 fire department locations will host trunk-or-treat events from 4 to 8 p.m. at various times. Additionally, 14 recreation centers will offer activities including haunted houses, carnival games, face painting, and arts and crafts.

The Department of Neighborhoods is leading the effort with support from General Services, Police, and Fire departments.

Additional Events

The celebration extends beyond Halloween night with two major park events:
ScareFest at Palmer Park on Oct. 25 from 5 to 10 p.m. will feature a Zombie Trail of Terror, thrill rides, haunted attractions, inflatables, food trucks, and vendors.

Fall Fest at Williams Park on Nov. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. will include carnival rides, hay and pony rides, a petting zoo, paintball, rock climbing, zip lining, a coat giveaway, and food trucks.

Sponsors and Volunteers Needed

Michigan Recreational Construction Inc., Rocket Companies, and Major Contracting serve as lead sponsors with $5,000 donations each. Additional sponsors include Blue Cross Blue Shield, DTE Energy, Detroit Thermal, and Uncle Rays, among others.
"Michigan Recreational Construction has been building parks and playgrounds for 28 years, but our most meaningful work has been right here in the city of Detroit," said Craig Sheffer, MRC President. "This event brings excitement and magical moments across Detroit, which we are honored to be a part of."

The city continues to seek additional sponsors, candy donations, and volunteers to support events throughout the celebration. Residents interested in decorating vehicles for trunk-or-treat events or volunteering can visit halloweeninthed.org or call (313) 224-4415.

Companies wishing to become sponsors can contact tonie.stovall@detroitmi.gov or call (313) 236-8521.
