— A
large
industrial
fire is
raging
at an
oil
processing
facility
on
Detroit's
East
Side
Monday,
sending
towering
flames
and
thick
black
smoke
visible
for
miles
across
the city
while
injuring
at least
one
firefighter.
The
blaze
erupted
at
Aevitas
Specialty
Services
Corp. in
the 600
block of
Lycaste
Street
at Edlie
Street,
near
Jefferson
Avenue
and the
Great
Lakes
Water
Authority
facility.
The
company
processes
used oil
from
Detroit's
Big
Three
automakers.
Witnesses
described
flames
"shooting
up in
the air"
as
emergency
crews
rushed
to the
scene.
The
acrid
smell of
burning
oil
permeated
the
area,
consistent
with the
facility's
operations
handling
industrial
waste
oil.
Detroit
Fire
Department
officials
confirmed
one
firefighter
sustained
injuries
while
battling
the
flames,
though
