Ono
named
finalist
for
University
of
Florida
Presidency

Santa J.
Ono, the
15th
president
of the
University
of
Michigan,
has been
named
the sole
finalist
for the
presidency
of the
University
of
Florida.
Pending
approval
by
Florida’s
Board of
Governors,
Ono is
expected
to
assume
the
role,
marking
the end
of his
tenure
at U-M.
“Serving
as your
president
over
these
past
three
academic
years
has been
a
distinct
honor,”
Ono
wrote in
a May 4
email to
the U-M
community.
“Every
day, I
have
been
inspired
beyond
words by
the
vibrancy,
brilliance,
and
dedication
of our
faculty,
staff,
students,
and
alumni.”
In a
separate
statement,
the
Board of
Regents
expressed
deep
appreciation
for
Ono’s
leadership
and
accomplishments
while
reaffirming
their
commitment
to a
smooth
transition.
Ono has
pledged
to
remain
at U-M
as long
as
necessary
to
facilitate
the
appointment
of an
interim
president.
“President
Ono’s
leadership
is
reflected
in
numerous
achievements,”
the
board
noted in
its
message.
“During
his
tenure,
he has
encouraged
all of
us to
dream
boldly,
fearlessly
explore
ideas,
push the
boundaries
of
knowledge,
and be
ambitious
in our
plans,
achieving
more
than we
ever
imagined.”
The
board
added
that
Ono’s
contributions
“leave a
legacy
of which
all of
us—especially
President
Ono—can
be
proud.”
A
distinguished
vision
researcher
known
for
pioneering
studies
on the
immune
system
and eye
disease,
Ono
began
his
presidency
at U-M
in
October
2022
following
a
unanimous
appointment
by the
Board of
Regents.
His
leadership
at
Michigan
marks
his
third
presidential
role,
having
previously
served
as
president
and vice
chancellor
of the
University
of
British
Columbia
and as
president
and
provost
of the
University
of
Cincinnati.
His
academic
career
also
includes
leadership
positions
at Emory
University
and
faculty
appointments
at Johns
Hopkins,
Harvard,
and
University
College
London.
Ono
holds a
B.A. in
biological
sciences
from the
University
of
Chicago
and a
Ph.D. in
experimental
medicine
from
McGill
University.
At U-M,
he
spearheaded
two
ambitious
university-wide
initiatives—Vision
2034 and
Campus
Plan
2050—engaging
more
than
25,000
students,
faculty,
staff,
alumni,
donors,
and
local
community
members
in
shaping
a
long-term
strategic
vision
for the
university
and the
Ann
Arbor
campus.
His
tenure
has been
marked
by
several
transformative
achievements,
including:

Establishing
partnerships
with
OpenAI
and Los
Alamos
National
Laboratory
and
launching
a
groundbreaking
$1.2
billion
artificial
intelligence
research
ecosystem.

Founding
the
University
of
Michigan
Center
for
Innovation
in
Detroit,
creating
the
Raoul
Wallenberg
Institute
and the
Institute
for
Civil
Discourse,
initiating
the
Vision
2034
Faculty
Enhancement
Initiative,
and
launching
a public
arts
endowment
fund.

Overseeing
major
campus
developments,
including
new
residential
halls
and a
state-of-the-art
Campus
Recreation
Center.

Expanding
the Go
Blue
Guarantee
and
significantly
investing
in the
Wolverine
Pathways
program
to
support
educational
access
and
equity.

campaign

brighter

Ono
wrote on
Sunday.
“I have

to serve
the
people
of
Michigan
and the
