SOUTHFIELD
- The
American
Cancer
Society
announces
Saunteel
Jenkins
as the
2023
Mission
Speaker
at the
November
11
Detroit
Discovery
Ball. In
2020,
Jenkins
was
diagnosed
with
Stage 3,
triple-negative
breast
cancer.
Following
successful
treatment,
Saunteel
is a
humble
and
grateful
survivor
who
wants to
help
spread
the word
about
the
importance
of
regular
screenings,
early
detection,
and
access
to
treatment.
Saunteel
Jenkins
has been
the
Chief
Executive
Officer
of The
Heat and
Warmth
Fund
(THAW)
since
2014.
THAW, an
independent
nonprofit
organization,
provides
utility
assistance,
energy
efficiency
assistance,
and case
management
services
to
Michigan
residents
in need.
Jenkins
has
found
strength
in
sharing
her
story to
inspire
and help
others.
“Like
many, I
delayed
my
annual
screenings
and that
is part
of my
message
to
others
now.
Additionally,
I look
back and
can
acknowledge
how
fortunate
I was in
many
ways
with my
family
support,
my
health
insurance,
even my
familiarity
with the
health
care
system.
So many
do not
have
these
benefits.”
Jenkins
received
treatment
from Dr.
Eleanor
Walker
at Henry
Ford,
another
Detroit
Discovery
Ball
honoree.
Since
1985,
THAW has
provided
nearly
$230
million

assistance

313,000
struggling
Michigan
families.
