DETROIT
- At the
Detroit
branch
NAACP
Fight
for
Freedom
Fund
dinner
in
Detroit,
Rev. Dr.
Wendell
Anthony
presents
President
Joe
Biden
with a
lifetime
achievement
award on
Sunday,
May 19,
2024.
“Reelect
Kamala
and me
and a
Democratic
Congress
and we
will
help the
NAACP.
We will
sign the
John
Lewis
Voting
Rights
Act, the
Freedom
to Vote
Act and
make Roe
v Wade
the law
of the
land
again,”
he said,
referring
to
several
pieces
of
legislation
that are
core to
Democrats’
platform. Voting and
reproductive
rights
legislation
faces a
tough
hurdle
in a
divided
Congress.
President
Biden
questioned
whether
former
President
Trump
would
appoint
qualified
individuals
to the
Supreme
Court if
re-elected.
At the
NAACP
Freedom
Fund
Dinner,
Biden
took aim
at his
political
adversary
for
nominating
justices
to the
Supreme
Court
who
played a
role in
unfavorable
rulings
according
to his
perspective.
In a
political
speech
at the
NAACP
Freedom
Fund
Dinner
on
Sunday,
Biden
criticized
his
political
opponent
for
nominating
justices
to the
high
court
who
contributed
to
decisions
he
disagrees
with.
“Trump
openly
encourages
voter
suppression
and
election
subversion.
He and
his MAGA
extremists
gutted
affirmative
action,”
Biden
added.
Biden
requested
the
crowd to
contemplate
Trump's
possible
nominees
for
lifetime
appointments,
vowing
to
select
impartial
judges
if
reelected
with
Vice
President
Kamala
Harris.
“Let me
ask you,
if he’s
reelected,
who do
you
think
you’ll
put on a
Supreme
Court?
Do you
think
he’ll
put
anybody
who has
a
brain?”
Biden
said.
“Folks,
look: As
Dr. King
said,
give us
the
ballot.
We’ll
put
judges
on the
bench
who will
judge
justly
and do
mercy.”
During
his time
in
office,
Trump
appointed
three
conservative
justices
to the
Supreme
Court,
which
has a
total of
nine
justices.
Both
Trump
and
political
observers
from
different
sides
credit
his
picks
with
influencing
some of
the most
significant
legal
decisions
in
recent
years,
such as
the
overturning
of Roe
v. Wade,
a ruling
that
guaranteed
the
federal
right to
an
abortion.
