- The
Detroit
Branch
NAACP
will
hold the
69th
Annual
Fight
For
Freedom
Fund
Dinner
on
Sunday,
May 19,
at
Huntington
Place.
The
event
aims to
preserve
liberty
and
protect
freedom
by
encouraging
everyone
to
actively
participate
in
democracy.
The 46th
President
of the
United
States,
the
Honorable
Joseph
R.
Biden,
will be
the
keynote
speaker
for the
event.
For his
dedicated
service
to the
American
people,
President
Biden
will
receive
the
James
Weldon
Johnson
Lifetime
Achievement
Award .
This
year's
honorees
for the
Great
Expectations
Award
are
Spain
Middle
School,
Renaissance
High
School,
and
Black
Tech
Saturdays.
Spain
Middle
School
won
first
place in
their
division
at the
State
Regional
Competition
for
Robotics,
while
Renaissance
High
School
won
first
place in
the U.S.
Chess
Federation
National
High
School
Championship.
Black
Tech
Saturdays
is an
organization
that
supports
African
American
innovation,
creativity,
and
excellence.
Attorney
Khalilah
V.
Spencer
will
receive
the Ida
B. Wells
Freedom
&
Justice
Award,
while
the
William
Monroe
Trotter
Freedom
&
Justice
Award
will be
presented
to Rev.
Dr.
Frederick
D.
Haynes,
III,
Senior
Pastor
of
Friendship-West
Baptist
Church.
Senator
Debbie
Stabenow
will be
receiving
the
Presidential
Award in
recognition
of her
support
for
justice
and
equity
across
Detroit
and
Michigan.
Freedom
Weekend
will
precede
the
Fight
For
Freedom
Fund
Dinner
from
Tuesday,
May 14,
through
Saturday,
May 18.
The
event
includes
Health/Run/Wellness
Day,
Seniors
Care
Day,
Youth
Career
Summit,
and a
special
Labor
Leaders
Luncheon
featuring
the
first
African
American
President
of the
Communications
Workers
of
America,
Claude
Cummings.
