Shooting
Draws
Scrutiny
After

Death

HOUSTON
- A
Mexican
man
identified
as
Lorenzo
Salgado
Araujo
was
fatally
shot by
an
Immigration
and
Customs
Enforcement
agent
during a
traffic
stop in
Houston
on July
7,
triggering
protests,
political
backlash,
and
calls
for an
independent
investigation.
Federal
officials
say
Salgado
Araujo
was not
the
intended
target
of the
operation,
but his
family
and
witnesses
have
disputed
the
government’s
account
of what
happened.
According
to U.S.
officials,
agents
were
searching
for
someone
else and
believed
a person
in a
white
van
resembled
their
target.
DHS has
said the
officer
fired in
self-defense
after
Salgado
Araujo
allegedly
tried to
flee and
rammed
an ICE
vehicle,
though
that
account
has been
challenged
by
witnesses
and
family
members.
He was
taken to
a
hospital
and
later
died
from his
injuries.
The
shooting
has
intensified
demands
for
transparency
in a
case
that is
already
drawing
national
attention.
The DHS
Office
of
Inspector
General
is
investigating,
and the
FBI in
Houston
is also
looking
into the
incident,
including
whether
a
federal
officer
was
assaulted.
Houston
police
said
they
would
support
a prompt
and
thorough
review
at the
request
of the
mayor.
Salgado
Araujo’s
death
has
become a
flashpoint
in the
broader
debate
over
immigration
enforcement,
especially
amid
concerns
about
the use
of force
and the
lack of
body-camera
footage
from the
officers
involved.
His
family
says he
had no
criminal
history
and was
working
in the
Houston
area,
while
advocates
have
called
for an
independent
probe
into the
shooting.
