WASHINGTON
-
Security
concerns
intensified
this
week
after a
shooting
near the
White
House
Correspondents’
Dinner
at the
Washington
Hilton
over the
weekend,
with
Republicans
rallying
behind
President
Donald
Trump’s
proposal
for a
new
White
House
ballroom
to
bolster
safety.
The
shooting
occurred
late
Saturday
near the
venue’s
perimeter,
outside
the main
security
zone,
resulting
in only
one
minor
injury.
Attendees
briefly
entered
lockdown
as
authorities
addressed
what
appeared
to be an
altercation
from
nearby
streets.
The
Secret
Service
and D.C.
police
continue
investigating
the
non-event-related
incident.
President
Trump,
serving
his
second
term
after
reelection
in
November
2024 and
inauguration
in
January
2025,
has long
championed
an
on-site
White
House
ballroom
for
secure
hosting
of
events.
GOP
lawmakers
on
Monday
cited
the
episode
as
critical
evidence
of
off-site
vulnerabilities.
One
Republican
noted
after
the
caucus
that a
dedicated
ballroom
on White
House
grounds
would
ensure
total
perimeter
control
and
layered
protection.
Supporters
emphasize
streamlined
coordination
among
Secret
Service,
local
law
enforcement,
and
military
units to
minimize
public
exposure.
Democrats
and
press
advocates
caution
against
politicization,
noting
the
minor
incident
fell
outside
credentialed
areas.
An
administration
source
stated
that
this
external
event
does not
signal
systemic
failure
and that
reviews
should
inform
any
future
changes.
The
White
House
has not
yet
officially
endorsed
the new
funding
bill,
though
the
President
took to
social
media to
urge
critics
to drop
their
lawsuits,
stating
the
incident
"would
never
have
happened"
on White
House
grounds.
Federal
judges
are
currently
weighing
whether
above-ground
construction
can
resume
while
the
legal
challenges
regarding
the East
Wing’s
demolition
continue.
