ARLINGTON, Va. — Multiple floors inside the Pentagon were locked down and evacuated Thursday morning following a hazardous materials incident that triggered an air quality concern and a shelter-in-place directive for the affected area.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that the facility's advanced systems identified the issue, stating the department is implementing standard safety procedures while response teams assess the situation's significance. The incident prompted emergency responders from Virginia, including the Arlington County Fire Department's hazardous materials unit, to deploy to the site to assist the Pentagon Force Protection Agency's Hazmat Team.

No injuries have been reported as of midday, though the Pentagon security team indicated that response personnel from various agencies are visible in the central courtyard as precautionary measures continue.

The Arlington County Fire Department announced on social media that their teams are engaged at the Pentagon during the hazardous materials situation. CNN reported that the facility was placed on lockdown with evacuations occurring from multiple levels, though sources did not specify what substance triggered the air quality alert.

This is a developing news story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available about the cause of the incident and when the locked-down areas will be cleared.
