Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s Soirée on the Greenway fundraiser returns to the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard

DETROIT - The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s festive Soirée on the Greenway fundraiser returns to the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard on October 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. for a masquerade under the stars featuring delicious food and drink, live music and circus performers, a costume contest, an exotic petting zoo and more incredible surprises. Additionally, Soirée will continue the Conservancy’s 20thanniversary celebrations with the unveiling of a new anniversary-themed mural on the Dequindre Cut.

For the second year in a row, Soirée will serve as an exclusive preview of the Detroit Harvest Fest & Food Truck Rally as guests get the opportunity to sample a lineup of specially-curated delicious eats and drinks.

The Dequindre Cut Freight Yard is located between Division Street and the Wilkins Street Plaza along the Dequindre Cut. Soirée is a 21-and-over event.

Soirée guests are encouraged to don their most creative masquerade masks and costumes for the event. And this year, the creativity of the best-dressed guests will be celebrated during a costume contest, sponsored by Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. The grand prize will be $500 and a weekend stay at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. Attendees interested in participating can enter the contest at the event. The first 25 Soirée guests will receive complimentary one-of-a-kind masquerade masks created by local artists.

This year marks the ninth annual Soirée on the Greenway, and the fourth one in which Citizens has generously supported the event as Presenting Sponsor.

New Public Art Unveiled at Soirée
In what has become a popular annual Soirée tradition, guests will be among the first to see a colorful new mural that will be unveiled at the event. This year’s mural by Detroit-based artist Joel Grothaus from Signal Return will commemorate the Detroit Riverfront’s 20th Anniversary. Drawing inspiration from Signal Return’s anniversary letterpress print, the new mural will serve as a colorful and permanent display of 20 years of riverfront revitalization.

Soirée Guests Can Enjoy Delicious Food and Drink
There will be delectable eats for everyone to enjoy as Soirée, featuring popular food trucks from the 2022 Detroit Harvest Fest, such as Bon Bon Bon, Real Taco Express, Rollin in the Dough, Wing Snob, Big Bo’s, Detroit Food Academy, Med Express To Go, Spun Sugar, and more.

Popular Destination Transformed into Cirque de Freight Yard

The Dequindre Cut Freight Yard will be transformed into the mysterious Cirque de Freight Yard, featuring circus performers, interactive fall experiences, and live music, presented by Entertainment Sponsor Team Rehabilitation Physical Therapy.

The Motley Misfits, a Michigan-based circus-style troupe, will have a lineup of performers, including fire dancers, contortionists, unicycle riders and stilt walkers. Additionally, guests can get a glimpse into their futures with tarot card and crystal ball readings.

Attendees can also test their skill at the Cirque de Freight Yard Arcade with classic carnival games such as Bank Shot and Stand A Bottle. Winners will receive unique riverfront prizes including custom playing cards, a knit beanie and more. The Carnival Arcade is sponsored by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.

New this year to the Cirque de Freight Yard area is a roaming exotic petting zoo featuring a wallaby, a mini cow and other interesting creatures that guests can interact with as they stroll the Cut. Soirée guests can also experience the thrill of riding a mechanical bull.

A Bizarre Musical Performance
The evening of interesting, strange and eclectic things to see and do continues at 7 p.m. with a memorable and bizarre musical performance from the Aston Neighborhood Pleasure Club, accompanied by Flames N’ Dames fire dancers.

Parking for Soirée is available in nearby lots and on neighboring streets. For guests who choose to bike to the event, Wheelhouse Detroit will operate a complimentary bike valet service.

Soirée is a fundraiser for the non-profit Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, which serves as the perpetual steward of the public spaces along the riverfront. The Conservancy is celebrating 20 years of revitalizing and transforming the Detroit Riverfront this year.

“Soirée is a magical evening along the Dequindre Cut,” said Cassie Brenske, chief development officer of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. “A true masquerade of art, music, and community, this fundraiser helps us steward the vital greenways connecting neighborhoods of Detroit to our beautiful world-class riverfront.”
