DETROIT
-
Detroit
Martin
Luther
King was
facing
Cleveland
offensive
player
of the
year
Marquise
Davis,
who
committed
to
Kentucky.
However,
it was
receiver/quarterback/defensive
back
Emere
Atkins
who
stole
the show
for
Cleveland
Heights.
Before
leaving
the game
in the
fourth
quarter
with a
right
ankle
injury
and his
team
trailing
by
three,
Atkins
had two
catches
for 77
yards
and a
75-yard
score
and
rushed 8
times
for 143
yards
and
back-to-back
59-yard
TD runs
to
destroy
the King
defense.
If
Atkins
doesn't
get
hurt...Who
knows.
Michael
Dukes
saved
the
Crusaders
with 184
yards
rushing
and King
on for a
25-21
victory
for
Coach
Terel
Patrick's
first
win.
"We have
a lot of
work; a
lot to
improve
on,''
said
Patrick.
"If we
play
like
this
next
week De
La Salle
will run
us out
the
park.
"We hung
in
there.
The
defense
made
some
plays.
We have
work to
do.''
Sophomore
quarterback
Darryl
Flemister
had the
misfortune
of
having
his
tipped
pass
caught
by
senior
John
Allen
Jr., for
a
66-yard
touchdown
with
9:41
left in
the
first
quarter
to give
King a
6-0
lead.
Davis,
in punt
formation,
fumbled
the snap
and was
tackled
at the
Heights'
five.
The snap
from
center
went
over
Flemister's
head. He
recovered
at the
Cleveland
23, but
the
drive
was
dead.
Dukes
sprinted
around
left end
for a
45-yard
touchdown
run with
6:47
left in
the
first
quarter
to give
King a
12-0
lead.
"Our
outside
runs
were
working,''
said
Dukes
"Our
O-Line
executed
our
plays.
We have
to keep
stepping
on the
gas. We
have to
keep
executing
our
plays.
Asher
Wilson
finally
got the
Tigers
on the
board
with a
75-yard
TD pass
to
Atkins
just
before
the half
to make
it 12-6.
It was a
forgettable
half by
both
offenses
with
incomplete
passes
and
botched
running
plays.
Flemister
spent
most of
the
first
half
scrambling
for his
life
while
the King
defense
put the
shackles
on
Davis,
who
never
got
untracked
in the
first
half and
had just
two
yards
rushing.
A
personal
foul
penalty
against
Cleveland
helped
keep a
drive
alive
and the
Crusaders
capitalized
on a
three-yard
run by
Dukes,
his
second,
with
8:51
left in
the
third
quarter
to make
is18-6.
Atkins
struck
again
with a
59-yard
TD run
up the
middle
and the
two-point
conversion
made it
18-14.
Atkins
struck
again,
this
time
from 59,
again,
to give
the
visitors
a 21-18
lead
with
4:02
left in
the
third.
Flemister
responded
with a
one-yard
run, set
up by
Dukes
48-yard
jaunt,
to give
King a
25-21
lead
with
9:41
left.
