DETROIT
- The
Chicago
Bears
are on
the
verge of
appointing
Ben
Johnson
as their
next
head
coach,
according
to NFL
Network
Insider
Tom
Pelissero.
With
contract
details
nearly
finalized,
Johnson
is
expected
to fly
to
Chicago
soon
and,
barring
any
last-minute
issues,
will
take
over the
head
coach
role.
Johnson,
who has
been
Detroit's
innovative
offensive
coordinator
for the
past
three
seasons,
will
replace
Matt
Eberflus,
who was
dismissed
midway
through
Chicago's
5-12
season
in 2024.
Assembling
Johnson's
coaching
staff is
expected
to
commence
swiftly,
with
former
Saints
head
coach
Dennis
Allen
being a
top
contender
for the
defensive
coordinator
position,
Pelissero
reported.
Johnson's
hiring
is also
anticipated
to
influence
other
teams in
the
hiring
cycle,
as he
had
interviewed
with the
Jaguars
and
Raiders,
both of
which
are
still
searching
for
their
next
head
coach.
Chicago
Bears
quarterback
Caleb
Williams
recently
recounted
a prank
in which
someone
texted
him,
pretending
to be
Ben
Johnson
and
claiming
to be
taking
the
Bears'
head
coaching
job.
Williams
laughed
about it
on a
podcast
after
realizing
it was a
joke,
but he
couldn't
conceal
his
excitement
and
respect
for
Johnson,
who was
highly
sought
after in
this
coaching
cycle.
Williams
had not
known
Johnson's
phone
number
before
the
prank,
but he
will
have it
now. The
Bears
are
finalizing
a deal
with
Johnson
to
become
the
team's
next
coach.
Continuing
a
pattern
of
hiring
coaches
without
prior
head-coaching
experience
— John
Fox (in
2015)
remains
the only
exception
in
recent
Bears
history
—
Johnson
joins
Chicago
with 13
NFL
seasons
behind
him and
a
significant
challenge
ahead:
building
a
lasting
foundation
of
success.
He steps
into a
team
already
centered
around
Caleb
Williams,
a
carefully
chosen
franchise
quarterback,
with
hopes he
can
replicate
the
success
he had
with
Goff in
Detroit.
At 38,
Johnson
brings a
reputation
for
professionalism
and
organization,
qualities
that
were
lacking
under
Matt
Eberflus
and
interim
coach
Thomas
Brown.
Brown’s
brief
tenure
as
play-caller
and
interim
coach
provided
a small
spark of
offensive
improvement,
but it
only
hinted
at the
potential
that
Williams
and the
Bears
could
reach
with the
right
leadership.
With a
proven
track
record
as a
play-caller
in
Detroit,
Johnson’s
mission
is
clear:
transform
aspirations
into
enduring
success
and
guide an
NFC
North
rival
toward a
brighter
future.
