DETROIT
- The
Detroit
Pistons
defeated
the
Atlanta
Hawks
99-98 on
Monday
night,
with
Cade
Cunningham
scoring
eight of
his 18
points
in the
final
3:21 to
lead the
rally.
The game
was a
defensive
battle
between
two
strong
teams.
The
Hawks
held a
one-point
lead at
halftime,
and both
offenses
struggled
early,
though
some of
that was
attributed
to
quality
defense.
Onyeka
Okongwu
was
particularly
impressive
in the
first
half for
Atlanta
with 18
points.
Despite
being
shorthanded
after a
grueling
double-overtime
victory
over
Philadelphia
the
night
before,
the
Hawks
showed
resilience.
Jalen
Johnson,
who was
coming
off his
career-high
41-point
performance
against
the
76ers,
started
slow but
scored
25
points
in the
second
half to
finish
with 29
points,
13
rebounds,
and
seven
assists.
Nickeil
Alexander-Walker
also
contributed
18
points
in the
second
half.
However,
Detroit's
dominance
on the
boards
and
closing
ability
proved
decisive.
The
Pistons
out-rebounded
the
Hawks
60-34,
had 19
second-chance
points,
and went
on an
11-point
scoring
run late
in the
game
after
the
Hawks
had
taken a
five-point
lead.
It was a
close
contest
between
two
talented
teams,
but the
Pistons'
rebounding
advantage
and
clutch
execution
down the
stretch
ultimately
sealed
the
victory.
