DETROIT
- The
New York
Mets
defeated
the
Detroit
Tigers
10-8 on
September
1st in
Detroit,
with
Juan
Soto
delivering
a
standout
performance
that
included
a grand
slam and
a
tiebreaking
triple
to lead
the
offensive
charge.
The game
was a
back-and-forth
battle
that saw
multiple
lead
changes.
Soto's
fourth-inning
homer
off
Charlie
Morton
put the
Mets
ahead
6-3, but
Detroit
wasn't
done
fighting.
After
the
Tigers
managed
to tie
the
score,
Soto
gave the
Mets an
8-6 lead
when he
tripled
off Drew
Sommers,
who
suffered
the loss
in his
first
big
league
decision.
The
Tigers
showed
early
offensive
firepower
as well.
Jahmai
Jones
had his
first
four-hit
game,
starting
when he
homered
on Sean
Manaea's
first
pitch,
and
Wenceel
Pérez's
two-run
homer
gave
Detroit
a 3-2
lead in
the
third.
This was
a
significant
performance
for
Soto,
who has
36 home
runs
this
season,
with his
previous
homers
all
being
solo or
two-run
drives.
His
clutch
hitting
has been
exceptional
lately,
going 11
for 26
with a
1.446
OPS with
runners
in
scoring
position
since
Aug. 1.
The
victory
was
important
for
playoff
positioning,
as New
York
maintained
a
four-game
lead
over
Cincinnati
for the
final NL
wild
card.
Meanwhile,
despite
the
loss,
Detroit
began
the day
with a
9˝-game
AL
Central
lead,
keeping
them in
strong
position
for
their
own
playoff
push.
