Detroit
Tigers
have
recently
signed
infielder
Gio
Urshela
to a
one-year
contract
worth
$1.5
million.
The
contract
includes
performance
bonuses
that can
go up to
$500,000
for
plate
appearances,
with
$100,000
each for
500,
530,
560,
590, and
620
plate
appearances.
Urshela,
who is
32 years
old, has
played
eight
Major
League
seasons
and has
hit
.277/.322/.423,
with 114
doubles,
seven
triples,
64 home
runs,
and an
undisclosed
number
of plate
appearances
in 664
games.
He was a
finalist
for the
American
League
third
baseman
Gold
Glove in
2020 and
played
for Team
Colombia
in the
2017 and
2022
World
Baseball
Classic.
In 2022,
Urshela
played
for the
Twins,
where he
had one
of the
best
seasons
of his
career,
playing
in 144
games
and
posting
a
.285/.338/.429
slash
line,
with 27
doubles,
three
triples,
13 home
runs,
and an
undisclosed
number
of plate
appearances.
He also
set
career-highs
in hits,
walks,
and
games
played.
However,
in 2023,
Urshela
was
limited
to 62
games
after
suffering
a
season-ending
injury
on June
15. He
hit
.299/.329/.374,
with
eight
doubles,
one
triple,
two home
runs,
and an
undisclosed
number
of plate
appearances.
At the
time of
his
injury,
Urshela
was
ranked
seventh
in the
American
League
in
batting
average.
Urshela
has also
played
in 22
postseason
games

different
seasons,
where he
went

with a
double,

home
runs,
and
eight
RBI.
Urshela,
who is
originally
from
Cartagena,
Colombia,
was
signed
by
Cleveland
as an
international
free
agent on
July 8,
